Rothschild

Overview
The Rothschild family of Paris, as seen from outside by Marie: the banking house and the family's drawing rooms and boxes, and in 1874 one «baron de Rothschild» whom she admires from afar. The tag is the family; the individual persons are not always identifiable. Adolphe de Rothschild (1823–1900) and his wife Julie have their own entry; the Mon Journal t.13 index has «Rothschild (Adolphe, baron de) : 8, 297; baronne de : 8, 13, 172, 297, 317», t.12 «Rothschild de (famille)», t.14–16 «Rothschild (les banquiers / les)».
In Marie's diary
- Paris, 1874 (19/1874-05-18 to 24/1874-09-18): «le baron de Rothschild, celui qui était à Nice» is seen with satisfaction in a respectable hall (019.0281), and «Rothschild ne fait pas défaut. Nous le voyons tous les jours, il me plaît» (019.0360); she blushes for him, is flattered that «le baron de Rothschild me trouvait une charmante enfant», having heard it through Barnola (020.0119–0122); the evening at the «hôtel Rothschild» torments her (020.0007–0013); she counts him among her «amis» of Paris (020.0380) and on 18 September 1874 in Paris notes that «Rothschild» is still missing from the company (024.0015). He is probably Adolphe, who in 1875 is «celui qui, il y a deux ans à Nice, s'arrêtait tout court et me regardait» (038.0254); the diary does not say so for 1874.
- Banking (067.0339, Kharkov, 28 October 1876): she takes at the bank «une traite de cinq mille roubles sur Rothschild».
- Newspaper clipping (081.0316–0325, 5 July 1878): «tous les membres de la famille Rothschild» are named among the congregation at a Spanish royal funeral service in Paris.
- Gavini circle, 1878–83: Mme Gavini cites «ces dames de Rothschild qui font de la peinture» and have teachers (083.0100); she dines with the Rothschilds and their ambassador, and she boasts that several of her friends asked to be «engagées» and the Rothschilds would not (085.0042, 085.0062); Marie blushes when «Mme de Rothschild m'adressa la parole» at the Salon on 16 May 1879 (085.0077); tickets promised to Marie are given to Mme de Rothschild (087.0291); at Mont-Dore Marie sees Mme de Rothschild arrive «avec palefreniers, chevaux» and feels the pain of her own situation (089.0222); the Gavinis have the Rothschild stage box at the Théâtre-Français and the Opéra (097.0268, 098.0164).
- Saint-Marceaux (100.0037): Marie and her companions conclude that he must be a Jew because «il va chez les Rothschild».
