Léonie (the maid)

Overview

Marie's maid and the household's femme de chambre in 1875–76, in Nice, Cannes (April 1875), Rome (March 1876) and Naples (April 1876), where she travels with the family. The Mon Journal indexes list her as «Léonie, domestique» (t.5, t.6, t.7). No surname or life dates are known; the diary treats her as part of the furniture and as a source of local news.

What the diary shows:

• She accompanies Marie on errands: «Appelle Léonie, elle m'accompagnera» (031.0027), fetches the letters, carries bathing things (037.0313), leads Marie and her friends to a fortune-teller («Léonie nous conduisait… la sorcière», 037.0431), and undresses her (049.0446, 059.0963).
• She reads cards for Marie («Hier elle m'a fait les cartes. Encore des bonheurs inouïs…», 034.0549) and gossips: «Léonie m'a dit un jour qu'elle avait servi les Audiffret et que le vieux était très bon» (034.0546); «Tous les voisins de la rue de France prévenus par l'indiscrète Léonie» (045.0004); she studies the Niçois dialect with Marie (046.0066).
• Marie uses her as a go-between. Marie plans to get a message through her (034.0431), and in Rome in March 1876 Léonie, «qui n'est pas à ma solde» (055.0541), carries Bruschetti's letter (055.0513) and is suspected of being bribed («C'est par Léonie qu'il fait ses affaires !», 055.0688); she also tells Maman what the hotel servants say of Count Antonelli (057.0193–0197, Naples).
• She and the Black page Fortuné «sont arrivés» on 30 January 1876 (053.0208).

Not this Léonie

The tag `LEONIE` has also been put on two other women, which should move (see worker report):

• 087.0535 (25 Feb 1880): «le modèle Léonie… c'est ce nom-là [Nana] que je donne à Léonie», a model of Julian's atelier («Léonie [Nana] (modèle atelier Julian)» in the Mon Journal t.13 index).
• 089.0139 (13 Jul 1880): «Les Tchoumakoff à dîner… je le fais danser avec Léonie» — Léonie Tchoumakoff, the painter's daughter, who has her own coverage in #Tchoumakoff.
• Also not her: Léonie Léon (Gambetta's companion, 093/1881-11-07) and Léonie d'Aunet (Étincelle's mother).
