The Canrobert family

Who they were
"Les Canrobert" is Marie's collective name, from February 1883 to her death, for the household of Marshal François Certain de Canrobert (1809–1895), his wife Leïla Flora Macdonald (1838–1889) and their children. They were her entry to the Bonapartist and artistic aristocracy of Paris: the circle of Princess Mathilde, Mme Hochon, the painters Francesqui, Boulanger and Lefèvre. For the individual members see:
- Marshal Canrobert (1809–1895), Marshal of France, senator.
- Maréchale Canrobert (Leïla Flora Macdonald, 1838–1889).
- Claire Canrobert (born 1865), the daughter and Marie's friend.
- Marcel: the elder son. Marie calls him "le frère de dix-sept ans qui est en vacances" in August 1883 (101.0240) and, in 1884, speaks of "l'air abruti de Marcel" (105.0435). He is probably Napoléon Eugène Marcelin Alfred Certain de Canrobert (1867–1921), a cavalry officer, who never married and with whom the male line of the name ended (napoleon.org, biography of Canrobert).
- Louis: the younger son, "le petit Louis Canrobert qui a dix ans" in May 1883 (099.0467), eleven in August (101.0240). He comes to Marie's on his free Thursdays (102.0200, taken to the Grévin museum), receives from her an old Caucasian dagger that her mother had brought back (102.0632), makes his first communion in May 1884 (104.0179) and is "le plus gentil gamin de douze ans" in August 1884 (105.0455). Marie made a pastel portrait of him in September 1883 (101.0305, 101.0320, retouched 101.0604); it figures as "Louis de Canrobert" in the 1885 posthumous catalogue. French Wikipedia says the marshal had three children, but none of the sources found names Louis.
Marie and the Canroberts
The group is first named on 15 March 1883, when "Mme et Mlle Canrobert" are among the visitors who arrive as Marie is finishing #Jean et Jacques (098.0498). From then on they appear as a unit at her perspective lessons (098.0484), at the Hochon soirées, at the Salon opening (099.0254), at Jouy-en-Josas, at the Invisibles on 15 December 1883 (102.0486) and at Princess Mathilde's. Her ledger of them is double. They are her friends: "Les Canrobert me jugent bien" (102.0397); "Ces Canrobert sont des anges" (102.0681); on New Year's Eve 1883 she enters the new year "au milieu de cette vraiment charmante et excellente famille de Canrobert" (102.0618). And they are her patrons, whose usefulness she calculates: "Par les Canrobert, on tient tout le Jury" (101.0250). Rumour marries her off to the son of General Fleury, "probablement à cause de notre amitié avec les Canrobert" (101.0332).
The relationship sours after the Salon of 1884 (see #Maréchale Canrobert). "Ces sacrés Canrobert qui trouvent ça naturel" that she has only a n° 3 (103.0692); "ces Canrobert m'assomment" for telling an artist what to paint (105.0150); on 5 August 1884, "Et ces Canrobert !" (105.0453). Yet they remain her most constant company to the end, and the Marshal is always spared.
