Overview

Zoé Pelikan, a young Russian woman of Nice, the daughter of M. Pelikan (a paralysed old gentleman, kindly and eager to oblige, who is received by the family; see Pelikan). Marie meets her on 5 November 1874 and finds her «très élégante personne et je crois exempte des envies et des cachotteries des Howard» (025.0156); she is twenty, brown-haired, small-featured, «de ma taille, bien faite, mais ses vingt ans lui font la gorge un peu forte» (025.0248). Her marriage to a junior naval officer named Cross is announced on 2 March 1875, and by 1880 she is Mme Cross. Mon Journal indices: t.4 «Pelikan (Mlle Zoé), 198, 200, 203-204, 207-209, 214, 273, 304, 343» and «Cross (M), futur mari de Zoé Pelikan, 329, 343»; t.13 «Pélikann (Zoé, devenue Mme Cross)».
