Bal de l'Opéra
Also known as: bal de l Opera, Bal de l'Opera, bal de l'Opéra, un bal de l'Opéra
Overview
The masked balls held at the Paris Opéra in the carnival season, which Marie attends in disguise with Dina and her friend Mme de Daillens, and which become, in January-February 1878, the setting of her flirtation with Cassagnac. In the diary it is a place where a respectable young woman is not supposed to go (her first impression: «je m'attendais à un bal beaucoup plus inconvenant … rien de ce qu'on voit sur les gravures», 077.0400). A footnote already in 091.0185 describes it as the Paris Opéra's masked ball, famous for its mixture of society and demi-monde.

- 1878-01-27/28: her first visit (077.0400), the Boyd girls «pincées, touchées, embrassées» (077.0442), and her promise to Cassagnac to sup with him and join him in his box at the next ball (077.0468).
- 1878-01-31: the aunt's unmasking of the joke costs them the monthly visits «et moi d'aller au bal de l'Opéra, à moitié inconnue» (077.0510).

- Later look-backs: Marie's own margin note on her plan «aller souper masquée avec Cassagnac» (079.0458); she twice came home alone from the ball at 5 or 6 a.m. in a cab (079.0481); Cassagnac's kisses on her gloves at the ball (079.0260); a woman who goes to find a man at the ball and spends three hours with him (079.0252, Marie musing).
