Identity

In Marie's 1874-1876 pages «le grand-duc Nicolas» is Grand Duke Nicholas Konstantinovich (1850-1918), «fils de Constantin», nephew of the Emperor, the scandalous grand duke of the Fanny Lear affair and the diamond theft of 1874 (Wikipedia, "Grand Duke Nicholas Konstantinovich of Russia"; the diary footnote at 064.0562 gives the same identification). The entry's earlier line that he was "marrying Mlle Skobeleff in 1874" is not established: it is only Marie's report of a rumour.

Diary References

  • 1874-03-15 (017): in a paragraph of marriage gossip («Tout le monde se marie cette année…», with the closing words of the Lewin item «Ce n'est qu'un on dit d'ailleurs»), Marie adds: «J'oublie un grand mariage, le grand-duc Nicolas, fils de Constantin, épouse Mlle Skobeleff sœur de la princesse Belocelsky.» This is a report of what is being said in Nice, not a fact; the English Wikipedia article on him lists other spouses (Nadezhda Dreyer, 1882) and no Skobeleff, so the rumour does not seem to have come true. See #Skobeleff.
  • 1875-12-01, 12-05 (050.0342, 050.0516) and 1876-02-28, 03-31 (054.0575, 056.0287): the Fanny Lear scandal; «ce grand-duc Nicolas qui a fait tant de scandale», «le malheureux grand-duc Nicolas Constantinovitch», his letters published in England by Fanny Lear.
  • 1876-08-09 to 08-15 (064): at General Rostovzeff's, «chef de la cour du grand-duc Nicolas» (064.0476), the grand duke is another man, Nikolai Nikolaevich the Elder, whose court Rostovtsov managed (see GENERAL_ROSTOVZEFF; tag removed 2026-10-22); «Le grand-duc Nicolas, neveu de l'Empereur et amant… de Fanny Lear» (064.0562); she jokes about loving him: «d'un duc tu es montée à un grand-duc» (064.0611); on 08-28 (065.0572) she falls asleep «en rêvant à Cassagnac ou au grand duc Nicolas».
The «description du portrait» is the one of 13 August 1876 (064.0559-0562: «J'ai vu son portrait, il y a trois mois, à Nice… Le grand-duc Nicolas, neveu de l'Empereur et amant… de Fanny Lear»), so this is still Nicholas Konstantinovich (0.85). The footnote and RSR note at 067.0926, which name Nikolai Nikolaevich (1831-1891), are wrong (fix listed in the identity-decisions TSV, 2026-10-22).
  • 1879-12-08 (086.0632): at the Russian church, «le Grand duc Nicolas l'a saluée»: another grand duke, not necessarily the same man.
