The Arsons of Marie's diary are the Arson de Saint-Joseph family of Nice, owners of the Villa Arson on the Saint-Barthélemy hill. "Le jeune Arson" — the boy her brother Paul befriends in October 1873 — is a young member of that family, identified by a reader of this edition as Victor Arson de Saint-Joseph, grandson of Pierre-Joseph Arson. The first name has not yet been confirmed from a second source.

The family

Pierre-Joseph Arson (1778–1851), a merchant from L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, bought the Saint-Barthélemy estate above Nice in 1812 and made its Italian-style terraced gardens famous; he was First Consul of Nice in 1830 and was created comte de Saint-Joseph. His sons Gédéon (1810–1847) and Gonzague (1814–1865) went on improving the villa. The family lived there until 1920, when Marie-Louise Arson de Saint-Joseph, the last of the name, sold it; the city bought the site in 1943, and it has housed the Villa Arson art school and centre since the 1960s–70s (fr.wikipedia, "Pierre-Joseph Arson"; Ville de Nice, exhibition "Villa Arson, œuvre et espoir des Arson de Saint-Joseph (1812-1920)").

Marie and the Arsons

  • October 1873 — Paul makes friends with "le jeune Arson" (010.0214); Marie meets him in the yellow drawing room, finds him shy, "un bon garçon" who took her for an American (010.0272), and has him to dinner: "un garçon simple, assez bête et un peu Niçois" (010.0285). Paul, Arson and Khalkionoff are "une trinité inséparable dont le Dieu est Walitsky" (010.0289).
  • November 1873 — Paul drives over to Arson's (011.0387); "les Arson" ride past with Mme Audiffret (012.0091–0092); Paul and Arson run the fireworks at the Bashkirtseffs' dinner (012.0303).
  • 17 January 1874 — someone comes to the Bashkirtseffs' house to fetch the young Arson: his mother has died. "C'est affreux !" (015.0222)
  • 1874–1875 — he is one of "ces petits de Nice" with Audiffret (024.0267) and was to be the go-between through whom a young man she admired would be presented to her (027.0241, 033.0267). The "demoiselles Arson", Audiffret's childhood friends, and Mlle Arson and her brother appear on the promenade and the Var road (034.0348, 048.0449); the family has a box at the theatre, where "tous les Arson de la terre, filles et garçons" sit with Léon (050.0260–0261, 050.0525).
