Lola Babanine

Overview

Marie Yégorovna Babanine, called Lola: Marie's cousin, daughter of Georges Babanine and Domenica, sister of Dina (Countess de Toulouse-Lautrec) and of Etienne, who killed himself at sixteen. Mon Journal t.9 index: «Babanine (Marie Yégorovna) [Lola], cousine de Marie Bashkirtseff» (pp.73-74, 145, 147-149, 165, 182); Marie herself writes «Marie Yégorovna Babanine (Lola)» when she is admitted to the "société du Cœur d'Argent" (067.0979). In the 1884 preface she is only «Une fille, Lola … La fille est mariée» (000.0035), but in the diary she is a lively companion in 1876:

• Rome, January-March 1876: she arrives at Nice with her mother Domenica (052.0116, 13 January 1876) and goes on with Dina and Marie to Rome, where she shares the carnival, the Pincio, St Peter's and the Capitol with Marie (053.0122 to 055.0004); she nicknames Ruspoli «Sobaka» (053.0382), announces «le vrai Soroka est arrivé» (053.0422) and jokes about the third admirer's umbrella (054.0027); «Lola n'est pas jolie mais le soir elle peut faire de l'effet» (053.0123); she leaves Rome with Domenica on 1 March (055.0004).
• Russia, September-November 1876: Marie visits «Doménica et Lola» at Poltava and talks of Rome (066.0196); Lola, Domenica and uncle Nicolas see her off at the station (066.0214-0216); at Kharkov in October she is in the party with Nadine, Etienne and Alexandre (067.0324, 067.0343) and brings Marie the gossip of Poltava (067.0300).
• 1881-1882: «Dina et sa sœur Lola» in Poltava (092.0107, 092.0120); Marie's retelling in March 1882 of the Babanine children, «Dina, Lola et le frère âgé de seize ans» (094.0313); and in September 1882 «Lola, la sœur de Dina s'est mariée» (096.0237).

Not to be confused with Lola Gorpintchenko

A second "Lola" is Marie [Lola] Gorpintchenko, Pacha's sister and Marie's cousin on the Bashkirtseff side, who married the Italian Sperandio (Mon Journal t.9 index: «Gorpintchenko (Marie) [Lola] (cousine de Marie Bashkirtseff): épouse Sperandio»; «Sperandio (M.) époux de Marie [Lola] Gorpinchencko»). She appears under the name Lola only once, at San Remo in December 1876: «la princesse, son amant italien, Hélène, sa fille, Lola et son mari, l'italien Sperandio» (068/1876-12-22, 068.0280); see SPERANDIO. That paragraph should not carry the LOLA tag. The Lola of 066/1876-09-13 and 09-14 (066.0196, 066.0214-0216) was re-checked: she is with her mother Domenica, so she is Lola Babanine.
