Overview

Ruy Blas is a dramma lirico in four acts by Filippo Marchetti to a libretto by Carlo d'Ormeville, after Victor Hugo's play Ruy Blas (1838). It was first given at La Scala, Milan, on 3 April 1869 (Wikipédia fr, "Ruy Blas (Marchetti)"). Hugo's play has its own entry.

Marie and this work

For Marie, Ruy Blas is "l'opéra d'Antonelli": the music she associates with Pietro Antonelli in Rome (054.0324, 062.0728, 064.0027).

  • 1 March 1873, Nice. At the Opéra, "Ruy Bias" and "Nelly" with no one of society to look at her (002.0135).
  • 11 February 1875, Nice. At the opera with Nadinka: they sing badly, and she is amused only by the beautiful Gioia opposite (029.0271).
  • 31 January - 8 February 1876, Rome. The opera is given nightly with the King present, the house packed, applauded frantically (053.0271); she goes again on 2, 6 and 8 February and on 20 February, hoping each time to see or be seen by Soroka (053.0344-0447, 054.0324).
  • 26 June 1876, Nice. Her mothers bring her the score and she reads the big Act II aria: "Ruy Blas, c'est l'opéra d'Antonelli, chantons-le pendant que je l'aime, car demain peut-être j'aimerai Audiffret et je voudrai chanter Mignon" (062.0715-0728; footnote 062.0715).
  • 20 July 1876, Paris. In the Bois she hums "des airs de Faust et de Ruy Blas. Et avec Ruy Blas j'ai pensé à Antonelli" (064.0027).
  • 11 April 1879, Paris. Her mother, refusing to let her go to Hugo's play at the Comédie-Française because "une reine est amoureuse d'un valet", says she knows it: "j'ai vu plusieurs fois l'opéra de Ruy Blas et c'est la même chose" (084.0650). The RSR note there suggests Marchetti's opera.

Not this work

087.0893, 095.0318 and 103.0416 are Hugo's play (recitations, the lackey's love for the Queen); 096.0257 is the title on her studio shelf of favourite books; the play is also the subject of 084.0650 (the Comédie-Française), apart from the sentence noted above. These belong to the Hugo entry.
