Louis Canrobert

Overview

The youngest child in the household of #Maréchal Canrobert and the #Maréchale, brother of #Claire and of #Marcel. Marie knows him in 1883-84: «le petit Louis Canrobert qui a dix ans» in May 1883 (099.0467), «Louis qui a onze ans» in August 1883 (101.0240), «le plus gentil gamin de douze ans» in August 1884 (105.0455). The identification as the Maréchal's child comes from the diary's grouping («la maréchale, Claire, Alice et le petit Louis Canrobert») and is probable, not documented; his birth date is not given.

Relevance to Marie

In September 1883, at the Canroberts' country house, Marie, ill with a cold, makes his portrait in pastel: begun 2 September (101.0305), worked at exclusively on 5 September (101.0310), «Louis ne pose pas du tout» while Marcel sings and Claire paints (101.0317, 7 September), finished 8 September (101.0320), retouched at Jouy on 14 October (101.0604). The pastel is not among the works catalogued on this site. On 15 May 1884 he makes his first communion and Marie sends him a missal from Gruel (104.0179); she notes the boy hurrying his father, «papa, dépêchons-nous» (104.0180).
