Overview
The portrait of Marie painted by her Julian-atelier master #Tony Robert-Fleury in Paris, in sittings from early August to 14 December 1882, paid for with 4,000 francs on 24 December 1882 and delivered to the Bashkirtseff house on 8 January 1883. It is not by Marie (compare her own portraits, e.g. #Portrait de Dina (pastel)). Marie calls it «mon portrait»; the diary does not give its title, size or present whereabouts, and none is stated here.
What Marie records
- Composition. «Je suis assise dans un grand fauteuil, en robe de mousseline blanche à moitié décolletée. La pose est assez éveillée, j'ai l'air de causer, je suis de face» (096.0033, 7 August 1882). On 17 September, after fifteen sittings, Tony replaces the red drapery with her writing desk «avec tout ce qui l'entoure»: she remains «en tenue de soirée et un éventail à la main» (096.0248); the background becomes a corner of her library (096.0256).
- Her verdicts. «Mon portrait sera incontestablement banal» (096.0033); «En somme le portrait est joli, il y a même une main qui est ravissante. C'est ressemblant» (096.0091); on 18 November, seeing it nearly finished: «Je le trouve mauvais ce portrait. Ce n'est pas moi… trop délayée» (097.0102); on 24 December: «Ce n'est pas Bastien qui ferait un tel portrait… il me montre en demoiselle dans un fauteuil, un éventail à la main» (097.0285); on 8 January 1883 when it arrives: «une véritable horreur… on dirait que je suis empalée tant je suis raide» (097.0412).
- Others. Julian called it «très joli et d'un arrangement charmant» (096.0246); her mother kept silent and the hair was changed (097.0206); on 14 December: «le portrait est fini !! Quel bonheur» (097.0241).
- Money and gossip. «Quatre mille francs c'est raide pour une grimace» (097.0412; footnote there: 4,000 francs sent 24 December 1882, 097.0283). In May 1883 she fears being said to be «très poussée en avant par M. Robert-Fleury parce qu'il a fait mon portrait» (099.0580).
