Pollack

Overview

A Pollack family that Marie meets in Madrid in October 1881 and sees again in Paris in 1882: the father, an administrator of railways (in Madrid; the Mon Journal t.14 index says «Pollack (M.), administrateur des chemins de fer», with the wife «Pollack (Mme)», a daughter «Pollack (Mlle)» and «Pollack (fils, peintre)»), his son, a young painter, and a daughter who sings. The name is also spelt «Pollak» in the diary. Their given names are not recorded.

Relevance to Marie

• The son. The painter Pollack was introduced on 2 October 1881 by Soria, whose friend is the father: «M. Pollack (administrateur des chemins de fer) et son fils qui est peintre, a travaillé chez Julian» (093.0169). He guides Marie and her aunt, works in the Prado in another room, brings drawings, joins the family for dinner and music, and accompanies them to Toledo (093.0175, 093.0193, 093.0196, 093.0219). He is twenty-two, «pas très fort» as a painter, and talks more of painting than he paints (093.0193). She notes that «il y a je ne sais quoi de contraint chez Pollack ... et sa famille est je crois mécontente» (093.0226), and that her aunt would gladly pay for his coming to Toledo (093.0271).
• The father. The father introduces them to the opera director and artists at Guillaume Tell (093.0211) and takes them to Toledo (093.0239).
• The family. On 10 October they dine at the Pollacks, where «la jeune fille a vraiment du talent, une voix admirable» (093.0204); Marie visited the mother when seeing her son's studies (093.0197).
• Paris. He dines with the family on 9 January 1882 (094.0148) and comes to lunch on 14 July 1882 (095.0291); the Mon Journal t.15 index has «Pollack (M.), administrateur des chemins de fer : 40», which suggests the father, but the diary says only «Pollack».
