Overview

Gaius Julius Caesar (100–44 BC), Roman general and dictator, whom Marie meets as a Latin author she is made to translate and as a model of ambition. Not a person of her world.

Relevance to Marie

  • Latin lessons. «Le respectable Brunet et son César et Salluste» (034.0271, 14 June 1875); on 28 June «j'ai manqué la traduction d'un chapitre de César et l'étude d'une tarentelle de Chopin» (035.0036); on 24 March she reads Caesar «avec acharnement» in the dressing-room (030.0348).
  • Ambition. «Je suis comme César qui pleurait en regardant la statue d'Alexandre, parce qu'à son âge il était déjà grand, et que lui ne l'était pas encore» (030.0309, 22 March 1875), the anecdote told by Suetonius (Divus Iulius, 7) and Plutarch; on 22 March: «Alcibiade, Alexandre, César étaient-ils dignes ?» (030.0304). On 9 April 1875 she weeps over Nero and Alcibiade more than over Caesar (031.0161).
  • Defiance. On the 24-hour journey of January 1876 she sits «la figure couverte de mon manteau comme César après le Tu quoque ?», being cruel to her mother (051.0331).
  • Extravagance. On 21 September 1875: «Cela rappelle César faisant raser sa magnifique villa» (044.0021).
  • Rome, 19 January 1876. At the Galleria Spada she sees the statue said to be that of Pompey «aux pieds de laquelle le malheureux et divin César a été assassiné», with a stain on the knee said to be his blood (052.0289).
