Mount Vesuvius (French le Vésuve), the volcano above the Bay of Naples. It is scenery for Marie in her Naples stays of April 1876 and February 1877, a figure of speech, and an element of the dream picture she plans in June 1877. She never describes an ascent.
In Marie's diary

- 1876-04-17 (058.0139): the tourist programme her companions press on her: «tu iras voir Pompéi, tu monteras sur le Vésuve, tu visiteras la Grotte d'Azur et celle du Chien».

- 1877-02-12 (068.1430): in a café-chaff exchange: «Je vous conseille la mort d'Empédocle, le Vésuve est là.»
