Roissard

Overview

Eugène Roissard de Bellet (1836–1918), banker of Nice, fifth baron de Bellet, general councillor and deputy for the Alpes-Maritimes from 1876 to 1881 (IdRef authority record 19776746X; Château de Bellet page, museedupatrimoine.fr). Marie calls him «le baron Roissard, député des Alpes-Maritimes» (063.0114, July 1876), which fits the date of his election. The Mon Journal indexes list «Roissard (M.)» in t.6 (pp. 68, 106, 111, 144) and t.7 (pp. 325, 330), «Roissard (baron)» in t.8 (p. 262) and «Roissard (Mme)» in t.6 (p. 159). The identification with this banker rests on title, place and date, not on a document naming him.

Relevance to Marie

A fixture of Nice society in 1875–76, and a lover of the Englishwoman «la Prodgers» (PRODGERS).

• 14 October 1875: on the Promenade among «Danis, Laurenti, Roissard et encore quelques petits» (047.0027).
• 26 October 1875: in the ground-floor box «louée pour la saison» by Audiffret («Bibi»), with «Saëtone, Laurenti, Bounin»: «toutes ces beautés font un tapage du diable» (048.0063).
• 28 October 1875: «La Prodgers avec Roissard son amant» yawns and grimaces in a box opposite (048.0142).
• 6 November, 11 November 1875: Audiffret watches Marie's box from behind Roissard (049.0010) and «derrière Mme Roissard» (049.0258).
• 3 May 1876: «Saëtone, Galula, Danis, Roissard et de temps en temps Audiffret» are the pearls of Nice society, which she finds insignificant (059.0684).
• 9 July 1876: «La Prodgers est ici. Elle est pour le moment la maîtresse du baron Roissard» (063.0114); Marie repeats the gossip that he grew rich by marrying the daughter of an old Englishman and a servant, and describes his in-laws in racially prejudiced terms that we do not reproduce; «M. Roissard y est même assez détesté», Mme di Clavesana says (063.0115). The gossip is Marie's report of Nice talk, not verified.
