Overview

Les Trois Mousquetaires (1844) is Alexandre Dumas père's historical adventure novel, written with Auguste Maquet, about the young Gascon d'Artagnan and the three musketeers Athos, Porthos and Aramis in the France of Louis XIII, Richelieu and Anne of Austria. It appeared first as a serial in Le Siècle in 1844 and began the d'Artagnan romances, continued in Vingt ans après (1845) and Le Vicomte de Bragelonne (1847-50). (Wikipedia, "The Three Musketeers" and "The d'Artagnan Romances"; for Dumas himself see Alexandre Dumas.)

Marie and this work

The book is part of the Dumas cycle that she reads and rereads through her teens.

  • June 1874, Paris. On 5 June she has "fini Les trois mousquetaires" and starts Vingt ans après; the death of Buckingham (the murder of the Duke of Buckingham at Portsmouth) still grieves her, "voilà deux fois que je la rencontre" (020.0135), so this is a second reading. That evening her cousin Dina "dévore Les trois mousquetaires" (020.0136). On 9 June she compares the comings and goings of her singing voice, which "fait des voyages comme Les trois mousquetaires" (020.0183); the point of the comparison is not explained.
  • October 1874 (024.0279). In conversation with Georges and Paul she recalls "les Mousquetaires et son Louis XIV" and says that she used to detest Dumas père after reading some of his son's works, "mais maintenant je l'aime".
  • 18 May 1875 (033.0042-0043). "Pauvre reine, pauvre Buckingham, ce matin j'ai lu d'eux et cette lecture m'a énervée, m'a attendrie, m'a émue" and "Beau, superbe, incomparable Buckingham !" Marie does not name the title here; the identification rests on the Queen and Buckingham (they also appear in Vingt ans après), so it is probable rather than certain.
  • 6 August 1875 (038.0152). Describing her plain white taffeta dress and transparent stockings, she reports that Stiopa asked whether "il y aurait un Buckingham pour me presser le pied comme à Anne d'Autriche": the scene in which Buckingham presses the Queen's foot at the ball (LAN note in the file).
  • May 1876 (059.0812, 059.0815). On 6 May 1876 she spends the day leafing through Le siècle de Louis XIV, "Les Mousquetaires", Vingt ans après and Bragelonne, and says she likes to reread these books because they speak of Aramis the churchman and of the cardinals and prelates she has otherwise met only in history "en gros"; she has always had a weakness for cardinals, and since Rome that weakness has become "plus prononcé" for Pietro Antonelli, whom she obstinately sees as "à moitié prêtre".
  • May 1878 (080.0110). Paul de Cassagnac "se prend pour d'Artagnan" and sprinkles his talk with sensational phrases borrowed from "Les Mousquetaires" or "Bragelone".
