Overview
Vingt ans après (1845) is Alexandre Dumas père's sequel to Les Trois Mousquetaires, written with Auguste Maquet. It follows d'Artagnan and the three musketeers during the Fronde, in the childhood of Louis XIV, and in England at the end of the Civil War, up to the execution of Charles I. It was serialized from January to August 1845 and precedes Le Vicomte de Bragelonne. (Wikipedia, "Twenty Years After".) For the author see Alexandre Dumas.
Marie and this work
- 5-9 June 1874 (Paris). She starts it right after finishing the Trois Mousquetaires, "c'est nouveau pour moi puisque je ne l'ai pas lu" (020.0135), reads it lying on the floor by the window (020.0136), and on 9 June: "J'ai fini Vingt ans après. J'en ai assez, je lis passionnément, je ne veux plus lire des livres comme ça, après tout il n'en reste rien" (020.0191).
- 17 July 1875 (037.0237). A cousin named Marie is reading it while Marie B. lies half-stretched on the sofa, barefoot, in a plain white woollen dress.
- 6 May 1876 (059.0812, 059.0815, 059.0966). She leafs through it with the other Dumas on a day of idleness, likes to reread it for its prelates, and berates herself: "Faut-il être abrutie pour relire Vingt ans après".
- 5 June 1876 (062.0204). Having read it twice, she reads it aloud to Dina instead of painting, because she wants "une personne fraîche, car je m'intéresserai de son intérêt."
