de Biesme

Vicomte Desmanet de Biesme, the elegant stranger Marie notices at Spa in August 1874 and cannot forget. The name belongs to an old noble family of the southern Netherlands, with the lordship of Biesme (now in Belgium) acquired in 1709 (everybodywiki «Famille Desmanet»; en.wikipedia «Sart-Eustache Castle»); that a vicomte of the family is meant is Marie's own statement.

• 1874-08-03 (022.0374): Marie writes: «le monsieur n'est pas de La Roussellière, c'est le vicomte Desmanet de Biesme, il a fait courir un cheval, Ardente, il fait la cour à Mme de La Roussellière.»
• 08-06 to 08-09 (022.0430, 022.0441, 023.0018, 023.0059): she drives along the Promenade because he always passes that way; «J'ai pensé à... M. de Biesme. Je croyais qu'il montait à cheval à côté de moi.»
• 08-11 (023.0080): at the café «M. de Biesme était là aussi et m'a regardée. Je le regrette plus que les autres, ... tant que c'est bête. Il a une belle voix en parlant.»
• 08-18 (023.0211): her family teases her about Doria; «ils n'ont pas fait attention à de Biesme auquel j'ai fait attention ... maman le reconnaît beau, il l'est vraiment.»
• 08-20 (023.0238): Kirsh writes that a cotillon was organised by Haristoff, de Biesme and others.

The Mon Journal t.4 index lists «Biesme (Desmanet vicomte de)», «voir Rousselière (baron de La)», and likewise for his supposed wife; that cross-reference is the index's confusion of the two men and the baronne, not Marie's meaning (022.0374 separates them).
