Humbert
Also known as: Humbert, Humberto, prince Humbert, prince Humberto
Overview
Humbert (Umberto) of Savoy, Prince of Piedmont, crown prince of Italy and, from January 1878, King Umberto I (b. 1844, assassinated 1900; Wikipedia, «Umberto I of Italy»). Son of King Victor-Emmanuel II, husband of Princess Marguerite (Margherita di Savoia, see MARGHERITA_DI_SAVOIA). The Mon Journal t.10 index spells him «Humberto (prince), fils du roi Victor-Emmanuel» (pp.29, 81, 93, 99, 120, 126, 186, 247).
In the diary Marie mostly sees him from a distance, with salutes exchanged: Rome, March-April 1876 («quant au gros roi et au prince Humbert, je les regarde droit dans les yeux comme des animaux», 055.0525; «le singe Humbert» preferring older women to Marguerite, 056.0340; «je ne voyais que le prince Humbert … c'est peut-être parce qu'il m'a regardée», 056.0535, riding at the Villa Borghese) and Naples, spring 1877 («la princesse Marguerite et Humbert sont arrivés», 070.0152; «le prince Humbert qui m'a rendu un salut superbe», 070.0389; «l'amour conjugal des sphères très élevées», 070.0655, after the «incident des deux soufflets»). In May 1877 she boasts that the prince, a connoisseur, turned in surprise to look at her on horseback (071.0443), and in July 1877 tells of the day «le prince m'avait un jour tiré son chapeau pour rire» (072.0428). In 1878 he is already the King «cet excellent Humbert» whom she imagines asking to take up a marriage project (077.0541). The early mentions are the princess seen at Spa in the park (021.0492, 1874; Humbert is named only as her husband) and a carriage greeting, in struck lines (054.0028).
