Overview

Tiziano Vecellio (c. 1488/90 – 1576), the leading painter of the Venetian Renaissance (Wikipedia, "Titian"). Marie writes «Titien» or «le Titien».

Relevance to Marie

In the galleries of Florence and Rome in 1875–76 Titian is the painter she names most, and in the Doria gallery she calls him «mon peintre favori» (053.0378, 4 Feb 1876). What she admires in him is mostly his women: their red-gold hair, fleshy arms and wrists and warm skin, which she sets against Raphael («ce pauvre Raphaël», 043.0167). In 1876 she builds a theory of blonde and dark beauty around his figures (061.0187–0192). By 1881 she has changed her mind and dismisses «les chairs […] fiques mais bêtes du Titien» next to Rubens (093.0207).
