A Roman count of Marie's acquaintance in Rome, 1876-1877. Marie describes him at the Apollo on 27 December 1876 as «le comte Oscar Angelini, neveu de l'empereur Guillaume du côté gauche, gras et barbu» (068.0311), i.e. said to be an illegitimate relative of Emperor William I of Germany; Kernberger (2013) renders "nephew of Emperor William on the left". No independent confirmation of this parentage has been found.Relevance to Marie
Angelini is one of Marie's teasing correspondents: on 1 January 1877 she sends him a lock of black hair from her mother's chignon and asks him to buy a bonbonnière for her (068.0373-0241); she thinks she is beginning to please him (068.0360). He comes to the Riviera in January 1877 (Monaco, 068.0730; Nice, with Rangoni, 068.0757, 068.0762, 068.0869). At the Apollo masked ball in Rome on 7 February 1877 Marie, disguised, walks round the hall with him: «il ressemble à une écrevisse enflée mais il n'est pas laid» (068.1009), and he later mistakes her mother in the pink domino for her (068.1013).References in Diary
