Prince Gryf-Jaxa-Bikowsky («Bikowsky de Nice»)

Overview

A Bikowsky whom Marie meets in Nice in February 1877 and sees daily in Naples in March 1877. She keeps him apart from the small Bikowsky of Paris in 1873 (BIKOWSKY): «j'ai rencontré Bikowsky de Nice. C'est le cousin de celui de Paris et ses cartes portent une couronne de prince et-Gryf-Jaxa-Bikowsky» (069.0430). The Mon Journal t.10 index has «Gryf-Jaxa-Bikowsky (prince), 36-38, 40-41»; the t.9 index has only «Bikowsky (M.) : 291» (the Nice meeting).

«et-Gryf-Jaxa-Bikowsky» is as printed (Mon Journal t.10 p.37, scan checked 2026-10-21); the «et-» is probably a typesetting slip (0.6). Gryf is a Polish coat of arms whose alternative names include Jaxa, and Bykowski is among the families listed under it (Wikipedia, «Gryf coat of arms»), so the name on his card joins the arms to the surname. Nothing else is known about him; the princely title is Marie's report of his visiting card.

• Nice, 4–5 February 1877: introduced by Mme Zurmüllen («M. Bikowsky qu'elle m'a présenté hier chez elle», 068.0977); one of the party the next evening with Pelikan, Zurmüllen and Meyssner (068.0978).
• Naples, 18–23 March 1877: met on a walk, escorts Marie and her mother to the Skating (069.0430, 069.0432–0433); his relatives «Mme et Mlle Hotowsky» call in the evening (069.0451; Marie later corrects the name to Gatowsky, 069.0515); sees them to their carriage after the Cercle philharmonique (069.0459); calls with Altamura (069.0480); at the Skating one of her «cavaliers» with Santasiglia (069.0492).
• Paris, 9 November 1878: «Ce soir les Mouzay et M. Bikowsky (celui de Naples) à dîner» (083.0160), still tagged BIKOWSKY (see OPEN-ITEMS).
