Macainne

M. Macainne, «officier anglais» (Mon Journal t.3 index; t.4 adds «[Makak]»), a Scot, whom Marie calls «l'Anglais» at Spa in summer 1874 (021.0015: «Il est officier en Angleterre, écossais, une de ses sœurs est une grande et belle blonde»). Tall, handsome and «assez bête», he is pursued by Mme Basilévitch, who meets him in the Casino billiard room (020.0467, 020.0471-0472); Marie translates her extravagant compliments to him (021.0020-0021) and wants to teach him to dance the galop (021.0060). At the hotel and promenades he is the «ours», «blunt», always with his sisters (021.0050), and Marie's Russian pun on his name is «Makak le cochon» (021.0032). Indexed pages: t.3 pp. 249-260; t.4 pp. 6-303.

His sister, «la grande Macainne», who re-appears in Nice in December 1874 and February 1875 (027.0230, 029.0218), has her own entry, #Miss Macainne.

  • Merged entry MACAINNE_FAMILY: at Spa on 28 June 1874 «cette famille anglaise Macainne, le frère fait l'admiration de Mme Basilévitch. C'est un homme grand, mais ordinaire» (020.0419). The tall sister has her own entry, #Miss Macainne.
