Cercle des Bains

Overview

The Cercle des Bains, a club at the seaside resort of Ostend where the Bashkirtseffs spent August–September 1874, with dances on alternate evenings: «Un soir on danse au cercle des Bains et l'autre au Casino» (023.0125). Not a person. Not to be confused with the Cercle Masséna of Nice.

The club is the centre of the Ostend social round: an evening after the Kursaal concert (15 August, 023.0125); lights out half way (19 August, 023.0216); a dinner there with the Tamancheffs (22 August, 023.0274) and with Basilévitch and Basilewsky, to which Barkowsky was to come to play (24 August, 023.0306); the baron Leiss makes her dance and she introduces him to her mother (24 August, 023.0311); the dinner of thirteen on 26 August (023.0347); on 31 August she goes against her will with Basilewsky and meets Doria Pamphilj there (023.0423); on 5 September, wind-blown, she walks to it on Florence's arm (023.0507) and remembers her walk home in the dark, «les quatre cigares des Plobsters s'éloignant» (023.0524).
