Baas

Overview

Baas, a restaurant at the Belgian spa town of Spa where the Bashkirtseffs took many of their meals in the summer of 1874 (Mon Journal t.3 index: «Baas, restaurant, 247»; t.4: «Baas, restaurant, 41, 79, 80, 81–82, 85, 89, 94»). It stands near the Croquets square and the Jardin; the ladies went there for meals and chocolate. Not a person.

Relevance to Marie

• 25 June 1874. The marquise Viviani tells them «que chez Baas on peut trouver un bon manger»; they find two cocottes leaving for Brussels and «plusieurs hommes communs et vilains» (020.0395).
• 20 July 1874. An evening ends badly: they go into Baas for lemonade and «aucun des messieurs ne se lève pour nous reconduire» (021.0450).
• 3–7 August 1874. Her canteen: she lunches there with Paul beside the Folignos (022.0372), «chez Baas, où on mange le mieux à Spa. J'aime Baas comme London House» (022.0385), eats there with her mother (022.0394, 022.0406, 022.0413, 022.0423), meets Gericke there (022.0394, 022.0423), and on 7 August has a cup of chocolate (022.0443).
