Overview

«Emile» is a man who stayed in Nice with the family in February-March 1873, together with a «Sophie», and left with her on 19 March 1873. The Mon Journal t.1 index lists him as «Tutscheff (Emile)» (pp. 12, 40, 44, 48, 51, 60, 61, 67, 68, 73, 74, 77), on the same pages as «Tutscheff (Mme Sophie Grigorievna), née Bashkirtseff». The t.2 index adds «Tutcheff (Emile), 255, 260», the days around 28 December 1873. The index gives no relationship, and Marie never writes «Tutcheff» next to the name Emile.

He is not the uncle Emile who died in 1874. That was Emile Stépanovitch Babanine, Maman's brother (t.5 and t.9 indexes, 067.0481); see Oncle Emile. The t.4 index files those 1874 pages (183-184, 220) under «Tutcheff (Emile)», but this repeats the t.1-t.2 headword and is read as a slip. An earlier version of this entry followed it.

Identity uncertain

We are not sure who this is. The diary of 1873 calls him only «Emile». He walks with Marie to Mme Canepa's (002.0038), joins Maman, Ma tante, Sophie, Dina and Marie at Rumpelmayer's (002.0078), goes «à la musique» with Marie and Dina (002.0137), talks with «papa» (probably Grand-papa) on the promenade (002.0223), and leaves with Sophie: «il lui donnait le bras, c'était vraiment touchant» (003.0054). The candidates are:

  • The husband of Sophie Tutcheff, Marie's paternal aunt. This is the reading of the Mon Journal t.1 index. On 28 December 1873 Marie writes «Mon oncle et ma tante Tutcheff sont arrivés, il a l'air d'un perfect pig» (014.0264), and the t.2 index puts that page under «Tutcheff (Emile)». Against this: the December line reads like a first impression of a man Marie had not just spent a month with, and on 27 February 1873, while «Sophie» and «Emile» were with the family, Maman speaks of «les Tutscheff» as a separate household invited to the Howards' («les Tutscheff étaient invités, nous non», 002/1873-02-27). The Bashkirtseff genealogy in Kernberger (2013, Appendix II) gives Sophie Pavlovna's husband only as «TUTCHEFF», without a first name. That husband, «M. Tutcheff», is alive in 1876-82 (067/1876-10-19; t.8, t.9 indexes «Tutcheff (M.)»).
  • Uncle Emile Babanine, Maman's brother. Marie calls her Babanine uncles by their first names. This Emile is with Grand-papa and Dina, and she is sad to see him go. Kernberger's glossary has only one Emile in the family, «Émile: Uncle Babanine». If this is right, the «Sophie» with him is not necessarily the aunt. Kernberger (2013, glossary) has «Sophie: Marie's cousin on her father's side; misidentified in earlier translations as Marie's Aunt Sophie».
  • The husband of another Sophie, for example a paternal cousin as in Kernberger. Nothing in the diary names him.

Sources checked: the 1873 paragraphs listed below; the Mon Journal indexes t.1, t.2, t.4, t.5, t.8 and t.9; Kernberger (2013), Appendices I and II. If you can identify this person, we would be glad to hear from you.

References in Diary

  • 1873-02-19 (002.0038): «Je suis allée à pied avec Emile pour parler à Mme Canepa.»
  • 1873-02-23 (002.0078): at Rumpelmayer's, «maman, ma tante, Sophie, Emile, Dina, moi, M. et Mme Anitchkoff».
  • 1873-03-02 (002.0137): after church, «à la musique, moi, Dina et Emile».
  • 1873-03-07 (002.0223): «parler à papa et Emile» on the promenade.
  • 1873-03-11, 03-12 (002.0286, 002.0301): «Emile devait partir à deux heures mais il est resté jusqu'à demain»; Marie walks home with Dina and Emile.
  • 1873-03-14, 03-17, 03-19 (003.0020, 003.0034, 003.0054): the departure with Sophie.

The arrival of «mon oncle et ma tante Tutcheff» on 28 December 1873 (014.0264) is tagged Tutcheff, since the text does not name the uncle.
