Swiss Times

Research Status: Basic Last Updated: 2026-10-22 Diary Coverage: March 1873 – November 1874 (Nice, Cannes)
Identity
«Les Swiss Times» is Marie's name for an English family of Nice, after the newspaper The Swiss Times, an English-language paper of Switzerland that printed lists of foreign visitors (an 1871 «Swiss Times Strangers List» sheet is known from the antiques trade). Marie reads the paper itself: «Le matin je lisais le Swiss Times, je voyais les listes des étrangers, pas à Nice mais partout … j'ai trouvé "Hamilton, the duke of" à Naples» (003.0071, 22 March 1873). The family is presumably that of the paper's man: «A Cannes nous rencontrons M. Howard du Swiss Times» (024.0180, 1 Oct 1874). Mon Journal t.1 index: «Swiss Times (les)»; t.3 index: «Swiss Times».The family: Marie and her party stop to talk «aux Swiss Times qui étaient en fiacre» (002.0204, 5 March 1873); she and Dina visit them and speak English («Elle était ravie de me voir», 005.0279, 14 June 1873); «nous vîmes tous les Swiss Times. M. Howard est arrivé de Vienne» (006.0231, 11 July 1873); at a wedding party she sits «entre Mme Anitchkoff, Howard, Swiss Times et Bête» (019.0169, 10 May 1874); Edy «a fait connaissance par les Galignanis (au Swiss Times)» (025.0165, 7 Nov 1874).
Identity uncertain
Whether «M. Howard du Swiss Times» belongs to the Howard family of Lise and Hélène (#Howard_family) is not settled: 006.0231 and 019.0169 name «Howard» and the «Swiss Times» side by side, which suggests two households. Sources checked: the paragraphs above, the t.1, t.3 and t.4 indexes, a web search for the paper. If you can identify this family, we would be glad to hear from you.Related
