Église de la Madeleine (Paris)
PlaceThe Madeleine is the large neoclassical Catholic church, built like a Greek temple, at the head of the rue Royale on the place de la Madeleine in Paris (8th arrondissement), in a fashionable quarter. For Marie it is the church of Paris's fashionable Sunday and of the rendez-vous with Cassagnac and Multedo in 1878. «La Madeleine» in her text can also mean the nearby post office (see below) or the quarter.
Église Saint-Augustin (Paris)
PlaceSaint-Augustin is the Paris parish church in the 8th arrondissement, at the end of the Boulevard Malesherbes, built by Victor Baltard between 1860 and 1871 (Wikipedia, «Saint-Augustin, Paris») with a pioneering metal frame behind its stone facing and a Romanesque-Byzantine design. Under the Second Empire it was a monumental landmark of the new Haussmann quarter, and for the Bonapartists of the Third Republic it was «l'église bonapartiste» (Marie, 079.0339): the church where the exiled dynasty's feasts and funerals were celebrated.

Épître à ma tante pour obtenir de l'argent (1875)
CultureA short verse letter to her aunt, written on **4 August 1875** and copied into the diary (038.0120-0124; the diary marks it as a letter, "Épître en vers de Marie à sa tante"). Marie says what she is imitating: "une épître de Marot au Roi pour obtenir de l'argent", that is, the Renaissance poet Clément Marot's verse petitions to a patron (038.0120; Marot's dates 1496-1544 per the project's LAN note). Her version, in the same short, jingling lines, asks the aunt for pocket money: she calls herself "la plus grande des trois Grâces" who "se trouve dans cent disgrâces", promises to repay double "lorsque reine je serai", and complains that her "âme poétique" and "cœur magnifique" are drying up "comme pastel / dans ce petit hôtel", because every evening at six she must go out to the Bois, which needs "voiture et toilette", and her purse is empty.
