De l'Allemagne (Madame de Staël)

Culture

*De l'Allemagne* (1810-1813) is Germaine de Staël's book on German life, literature, philosophy and religion, written during her exile from Napoleon's France. The first edition of 10,000 copies, printed in 1810, was destroyed on the Emperor's orders; the book was published in London in 1813 and exercised a major influence on French Romanticism (Wikipedia, "On Germany"; the author's own preface in the Gutenberg text is dated 1810 and 1813). Part I treats the country and its manners: chapter IX, **"Des étrangers qui veulent imiter l'esprit français"**, argues that since Louis XIV the good society of the whole Continent has taken pride in imitating the French, that conversation is "l'art" in which the French are "passés maîtres", and that foreigners who copy them "affectent plus d'immoralité, et sont plus frivoles qu'eux"; "la gloire et même l'agrément de chaque pays consistent toujours dans le caractère et l'esprit national".

DE_BARGEMSAT

Mme de Bargemsat, named in a margin note Marie added to the diary of 1874-03-14 (017.0310): «[Dans la marge: *Troïka*: je nomme Mmes del Borgo, d'Auzac et de Bargemsat.]». The note glosses the sentence «La préfecture avec la *troïka* était au premier rang» of the concert in Nice that day: the troika (the Russian three-horse team) is Marie's nickname for the three ladies she names. The Mon Journal t.3 index has «Bargemsat (Mme de), 114» (the page of this passage). See [#Mme d'Auzac](../mentioned/D_AUZAC.md) for another of the three.

Death & Mourning

Culture

This thematic tag collects diary paragraphs describing literal death events: funerals, burials, mourning periods, and encounters with the dead. Distinguished from the broader [MORTALITY](MORTALITY.md) theme, which captures Marie's figurative and philosophical preoccupation with death. Tag paragraphs with DEATH when they describe an actual death, a funeral or burial, mourning dress or behaviour, cemetery visits, or funeral music/services. Use MORTALITY for metaphorical death language ("il est mort pour moi") or existential reflections.

Death and funeral of Marie Bashkirtseff (1884)

Culture

Marie Bashkirtseff died at her family's house, 30 rue Ampère in Paris, on **31 October 1884**, eleven days after the last entry of the diary, aged twenty-five, three weeks before what would have been her twenty-sixth birthday (Kernberger 2013, Chronology; fr.wikipedia.org, "Marie Bashkirtseff", citing Bard and Chaperon, *Dictionnaire des féministes*, 2017). She had had tuberculosis since about 1874 (Hélard-Cosnier 1993; fr.wikipedia.org). The funeral was held on **Thursday 6 November 1884** at the Russian Orthodox church in the rue Daru. The coffin was afterwards laid in a vault until the chapel that Émile Bastien-Lepage designed for her at Passy was ready (see [Tomb of Marie Bashkirtseff](../../places/landmarks/TOMBE_MARIE_BASHKIRTSEFF.md)).

Del Puente I

Person

The marquis del Puente, a Spanish gentleman Marie meets at Spa in the summer of 1874; the diary's «Del Puente I» is the tag for the single man. The Mon Journal t.4 index has «Puente (marquis del)» on pp. 20, 42–43, 54, 67, 78, 91, 107, 154 (the Spa and Paris weeks).

On ne comprend pas comment on marche avec ça, c'est étroit, pointu, pas naturel mais joli et étonnant. Cela a causé une sorte de stupéfaction aux dames du Palais, et M. de Merced ne cache pas son étonnement.» A single mention; no first name or shop address was found.

Demi-monde

Culture

Dieppe

Place

[Dieppe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dieppe) is a coastal town in [Normandy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normandy), northern France, on the [English Channel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Channel). In the late 19th century it was France's oldest and most aristocratic [seaside resort](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seaside_resort), a mandatory summer destination for Parisian high society and international visitors. For Marie Bashkirtseff, Dieppe was the site of a three-week stay in August--September 1879, prescribed by her doctor as a [sea bathing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_bathing) cure for her respiratory ailments. It became a theatre of social performance, plein air painting, boredom, and her characteristic ambivalence about being anywhere other than Paris.

Dieu

Dieulafait

A Paris clothier: the Mon Journal indexes list «Dieulafait, magasin d'habillement» (t.3 p.240; t.4 p.12). Marie orders her riding clothes and outerwear there in 1874.

Dikanka

Place

Dikanka is the Kotchoubey family estate in the Poltava region, ten kilometres from the Bashkirtseff estate at [Gavronzi](./GAVRONZI.md). In Russian culture the name belongs to literature: Pushkin's *Poltava* (1829) sets there the story of Mazeppa, Mariya Kochubey and the execution of her father, and Gogol's *Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka* (1831–32) made the village a byword for Ukrainian village life. For the Bashkirtseff circle it was the grandest house in the neighbourhood, and being received there was a mark of standing.

Dina Babanina

Person

Dina was the daughter of Marie's maternal uncle **Georges Babanine** ([#Georges](../family/GEORGES.md)) and his wife **Domenica Pavlovna Issaïevitch** (Kernberger, Glossary). According to Marie's preface, Georges married at twenty "une belle veuve de trente-six ans, mère de plusieurs enfants" (000.0008); one of the widow's daughters, Marie née Kandiba ("Mashenka"), became the wife of Uncle Stepa Babanine. Dina's full siblings were Lola ("La fille est mariée", 000.0035; she married Alexander Nemerovsky per Kernberger, and Marie notes the wedding on 13 September 1882, 096.0237) and a brother, Stepan ("Etienne"), "mort à seize ans" (000.0035). On 25 January 1874 Marie reads in a Russian newspaper that Stepan, fifteen and a student at the military academy, had stabbed himself three times with a dagger at his mother's house (1874-01-25, in Kernberger's translation); Dina was not told. By February 1876 he is spoken of as dead (053, 1876-02-01). Kernberger's notes connect the suicide with Georges having his marriage to Domenica annulled, which left the children illegitimate (Kernberger 2013, notes).

Dina Bedriaga

Person

A young woman of Poltava society whom Marie calls "l'homme-femme". The Mon Journal t.9 index has "Bediagra (Mlle Dina)" (pp. 44, 70, 145); the diary text has both "Mlle Bedriaga" (065/1876-08-29) and "Mlle Bediagra" (066/1876-09-12).

Dnieper (Dniepr / Дніпро)

Place

The Dnieper (Ukrainian: Дніпро, Dnipro; Russian: Днепр, Dnepr) is one of the major rivers of Europe, flowing through Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. Marie mentions it during her visit to Kremontchougy in summer 1881.

Docteur Michel

Person

A Paris physician who attends Marie's mother in 1878, during her grandfather's last illness and the scenes made by her uncle Georges: «Le Docteur Michel, celui qui venait soigner maman pendant la maladie de grand-papa et les horreurs de... l'autre» (087.0531, 23 February 1880). He is also the family's source of political and society gossip, above all about Paul de Cassagnac's marriage. The Mon Journal indexes list him as «Michel (médecin)» (t.11 pp.240, 268, 287), «Michel (docteur)» (t.12 pp.28, 61, 113) and «Michel (Docteur)» (t.13 p.191). No first name is given and he has not been identified further.

Document Humain

Culture

"Document Humain" (Human Document) is a literary concept that became particularly significant in late 19th century French literature, especially in naturalist and realist movements. Dolmatoff

Person

Dom Fabrice

Person

An invented monk's name that Marie signed to an anonymous letter of 21 January 1876, sent under cover to be passed on «au fichu Emile» d'Audiffret; the letter mocks Audiffret as the «vil coq» ridden by a departed Don Quixote. One of the masks of the Audiffret campaign (see MOINES_DE_CIMIEZ).

Domenica Pavlovna Babanine, née Issaïevitch (Mme Georges)

Person

She married Georges when she was, per Marie's preface, thirty-six years old and already a widow with children; Georges was only twenty. The marriage occurred around 1853-1854, four or five years before Marie's birth in 1858. (Note: the Kernberger genealogy tree gives "Domenica Pavlovna ISSAÏEVITCH, née vers 1831" — the same birth-year band as Georges — which contradicts the preface's sixteen-year age gap; the tree scan is low-resolution and its year digits are not reliably legible.)

Domenico (Dominique) Antonelli, "le Sauvage"

Person

A brother of Pietro Antonelli; in Marie's private zoo of Roman suitors he is "le Sauvage", next to Paolo "le Lion", Torlonia "le Tigre" and Pietro "le Moine".

Dominica Pavlovna

Person

Dominique

Person

The coachman or driver for Marie's family. Marie gives him orders regarding their carriage movements during outings.

A steeplechase horse that Marie watches at Auteuil on the afternoon of the first Grand National de France (the future Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris), run on 25 May 1874 and won by the English mare Miss Hungerford (en.wikipedia «Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris»; tbheritage.com race chart).

Don Carlos

Person

Carlos de Borbón, Duke of Madrid (1848-1909), the Carlist pretender to the Spanish throne (Carlos VII for his partisans), in exile since the end of the Third Carlist War in February 1876 and living in Paris (English Wikipedia, «Carlos, Duke of Madrid»). Marie admires him as the handsomest and most "royal" man she has seen, and is repeatedly disappointed by his dullness. The Mon Journal indexes confirm the identification: t.9 «Carlos, Don : 246»; t.12 «Don Carlos de Bourbon : 165»; t.13 «Don Carlos (de Bourbon) : 37, 100».

Don Lorenzo (Madrid dealer)

Person

Don Lorenzo, a Madrid dealer in old Spanish fabrics whose shop Marie paints in October–November 1881: «Hier j'ai commencé une étude dans la boutique de l'illustre Lorenzo» (093.0258); she buys three hundred francs' worth of old embroideries and takes tender leave of «al senior Don Lorenzo» (093.0264, 20 October); she fears she has let herself be robbed by «maître Lorenzo» (093.0293), plans a picture from the study (093.0321), and returns on 2 November to redo the sketch (093.0326, 093.0330). Mon Journal t.14 index: «Lorenzo, Marchand de tissus espagnols».

Don Quichotte

Culture

Cervantes's novel, which Marie buys in Nice on 1874-10-09 (024.0274): «J'ai acheté "Les Femmes de la Bible", et les œuvres de Byron et de Shakespeare, et "Don Quichotte" que je n'ai pas encore lu.» She lists it with the other books bought in one round of the shops (with a subscription to the Morning Post). She says she has not yet read it; the diary does not record her reading it in this passage. Not a person.

Dori

Person

A small pet dog (female: «la ressuscita», «la pauvre petite bête») of the Bashkirtseff household in 1874; Mon Journal t.4 index «Dori, chien, 178, 204». The other household dogs of the time are Sandwich and Bagatelle.

Doria

Person

"Doria" in the diary is mainly the two sons of Prince Filippo Andrea V Doria Pamphilj (1813–1876), senator and acting mayor of Rome, who died in Rome on 19 March 1876 (en.wikipedia «Filippo Doria Pamphili»). Marie sees them first at Spa and Ostend in August–September 1874 and next in Nice, then daily in Rome in the winter of 1876, where she builds her romantic terror of the elder one. Wikipedia lists the sons as Giovanni Andrea and Alfonso; the diary's own names are «Gianetto/Giacometto» for the elder (the Mon Journal indexes «Doria (Giacometto)», «Doria (prince Gianetto)») and «Don Alphonse» for the younger (index: «Doria (Don Alphonse, prince) [Blanc]»); matching Gianetto to Giovanni Andrea is probable, not stated by the diary.

Doria Pamphilii

Person

Dory

Person

A female singer of the Italian opera company at the Nice Opéra in the seasons 1874-75 and 1875-76, in mezzo/contralto roles. Marie calls her "la bonne chanteuse Dory" (028.0113). First name not given.

Doubelt

Person

[Research needed]

Doucet

Person

«Doucet» in Marie's text is the Parisian dress-making house of **Jacques Doucet**, where she had her clothes made (1875-1883). The painter Lucien Doucet, whom she mentions in 1880 and 1883, is a different person with his own entry: [#Lucien Doucet](../artists/LUCIEN_DOUCET.md).

Douglas

Person

An actress, Mme Douglas, whom Marie names only as a point of comparison: describing Mme Angel on 1874-10-19 (024.0362), she says the lady is a Russian of thirty-five with magnificent hair, and that to make her one would have to melt together «Mlle Collignon et Douglas, l'actrice dramatique de l'année dernière». The Mon Journal t.4 index has «Douglas (Mme), actrice, 180». She was therefore a dramatic actress seen in Nice during the previous (1873–74) season; no first name or company was found.

Dr Pierre-Carl Potain

Person

Pierre Carl Édouard Potain (born in Paris, 19 July 1825; died in Paris, 5 January 1901; buried in Montparnasse) was the leading Parisian clinician of Marie's day in diseases of the heart and lungs. The page's old title "Pierre-Charles" is a variant: his birth certificate reads "Carle", and the diary's own footnotes give "Carl". He took his doctorate in 1853, became chef de clinique at the Charité under Bouillaud in 1858, médecin des hôpitaux in 1861 (Saint-Antoine, Necker), professor of medical pathology and then of clinical medicine from 1875, and worked at the Charité from 1882 to 1900. He was a member of the Académie de médecine and the Académie des sciences. In 1889, with Étienne-Jules Marey, he improved the blood-pressure instrument of von Basch by replacing the water with air. (Fr. Wikipedia, "Pierre Potain", https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Potain.)

Dr Tchernichoff

Person

A Russian physician of the Nice colony in spring 1876, in the circle of Nina Sapogenikoff. He is not the M. Tchernichoff of 1874 ([Tchernichoff](../mentioned/TCHERNICHOFF.md)); Marie herself separates them: «M. Tchernichoff ... pas le docteur Tchernichoff enfin» (024.0122). Dr. Jacques-Joseph Grancher

Person

Jacques-Joseph Grancher (1843-1907) was a prominent French physician, later renowned as a pediatrician and tuberculosis specialist, and one of the "five musketeers" of Louis Pasteur's circle at the Institut Pasteur. He was a pioneer in isolation and antiseptic protocols for preventing childhood tuberculosis, and later played a key role in defending Pasteur's rabies vaccine treatment (1887 Congress).

Dr. Rehberg

Person

Doctor in Nice chosen by Khalkionoff's mother to replace Dr. Walitsky. Marie implies he provided less care than Walitsky.

Dreams

Culture

This thematic tag collects diary paragraphs where Marie records or interprets a night dream: Hamilton or Cassagnac in her sleep, the dead returning, a dream read as an omen. She notes dreams quickly and often reads them as signs, so this tag sits close to [Omens & Superstition](SUPERSTITION.md) but is judged separately.

Drillat

Person

Person of low social standing whom Marie despises. Used as comparison for Georges's peasant friend.

Drochki

Culture

A drochki (also droshky, дрожки) is a light, low, open Russian carriage on four wheels, originally little more than a bench mounted on a plank between two axles. Marie spells it "drochki" in the French manner. The vehicle is distinctively Russian and appears in the diary only during Marie's visits to Russia.

Duchesse de Fitz-James (Marguerite de Marmier)

Person

The "duchesse de Fitz-James douairière" of the diary is, on the evidence, **Marguerite Claire Stéphanie de Marmier** (30 September 1807 – 15 October 1888), widow of Jacques Marie Emmanuel de Fitz-James, 7th duc de Fitz-James (1803–1846), whom she had married in 1826. She was the daughter of Philippe-Gabriel, 1st duc de Marmier. The Fitz-James were a legitimist family descended from James FitzJames, Duke of Berwick, the natural son of James II of England; the title was a French peerage. (Wikipedia fr, "Édouard de Fitz-James (1776-1838)" for the 1807–1888 dates; Utoronto Jacobite essay, "The Family of the Ducs de Fitz-James", for the marriage and children. A society chronicle of 1889 says she died "this week" in England at the age of eighty-five, which would put her death in 1889; the two sources disagree by a year and the genealogies are preferred here.)

Person

A lady «en blanc, le cou couvert de perles extraordinaires, qu'on disait la duchesse de Montmorency», seen once at a Paris charity sale on 1874-06-04 (020.0119). Mon Journal t.3 index: «Montmorency (duchesse de), 217».

Duchesse de Mouchy (Anna Murat)

Person

Anna Murat (1841-1924), daughter of Prince Lucien Murat and great-granddaughter of Joachim Murat and Caroline Bonaparte; on 18 December 1865 she married Antoine (Antonin-Just-Léon-Marie) de Noailles, 7th duc de Mouchy (1841-1909) (English Wikipedia, «Antonin-Just-Léon-Marie de Noailles»; thepeerage.com). Their children were François (1866-1900) and Sabine (1868-1881) (same sources). The Mon Journal indexes name her «Mouchy (duchesse de. née princesse Anna Murat)» (t.13) and «Mouchy (Mme Anna, duchesse de)» (t.14); the diary's «duchesse de Mouchy», «Mme de Mouchy» and «la Mouchy» are all she. Her husband: [Duc de Mouchy](DUC_DE_MOUCHY.md).

Dusautoy (pianist)

Person

This entry is for **Dusautoy the pianist** (carnets 091-102, 1881-1883): a young Conservatoire-trained pianist, friend of Prince Alexis Karageorgevitch and one of Marie's circle in her last years. The Paris tailor Dusautoy of May-June 1874 is a different person: [#Dusautoy (tailor)](DUSAUTOY_TAILLEUR.md).

Dusautoy (tailor, 1874)

Person

The Paris tailor who made Marie's riding habit in May-June 1874. The Bashkirtseffs, in Paris, order an «amazone» from Dusautoy (019.0314, 22 May 1874). The result is a failure: on 12 June Marie writes that the habit «est impossible», that «c'est une canaille que ce Dusautoy», and that, since the habit is still at his place and he wants his money, four «policemen» came and the family paid «trois cents francs» to be rid of them, [#Walitsky](../recurring/WALITSKY.md) undertaking to see to the rest (020.0228). The next day her mother tells the story to another tailor, «Alfred», who is to make her a new one (020.0238). On 20 June her mother asks M. de Villemessant of *Le Figaro* to put «mon Dusautoy» in his paper (020.0367). On 22 June Dusautoy calls but has neither remade nor altered the habit, «d'ailleurs c'eût été miracle, il était depuis deux semaines payé» (020.0376).

Duval, the Paris furniture dealer and decorator (Mon Journal indexes «Duval, magasin de meubles»: t.3 pp.236, 239; t.4 pp.147–166, 255, 279–282; t.5 pp.145–146; t.6 pp.179–189) from whom the Bashkirtseffs order the furnishings of their Nice villa in 1874. Not to be confused with «Duval (Mathias), professeur d'anatomie» (t.11 pp.59, 66). No first name found.

Duvernoy

Person

M. Duvernoy, a young man in the Paris circle of March 1881, cousin of M. Gavini (Mon Journal t.14 index: «Duvernoy (M.), cousin de M. Gavini: 104»). The single tagged paragraph (1881-03-25, 091.0355): at the Gavinis' Marie finds, with the blind marquis Casa Riera, «Duvernoy, le cousin de Gavini, il est jeune chevreau, jeune aussi, Gabriel également jeune, Géry, Basire jeune et charmant, puis Sarlande et le marquis de Graves qui était dans la loge du duc de Nemours». A footnote on that paragraph explains Marie's phrase. No first name was found; see [#Gavini](GAVINI.md).
