Mlle Mechtchersky
Мещерская (Meshcherskaya)
Also known as: Mlle Mechtchersky, la Mechtchersky, la Metchersky, la Mestchersky
Show in diary 14 mentionsOverview
A young Russian princess of the Mechtchersky family in Rome in 1876, courted by Duke Clément Torlonia. Not identified further; her first name is never given. Mon Journal t.7 index: «Mechtchersky (Mlle) : 207, 276-277, 280», kept apart from «Mechtchersky (prince)» and «Mechtchersky (princesse)», presumably her parents. The family stubs PRINCE_MECHTCHERSKY, MESTCHERSKY and PRINCE_ET_PRINCESSE_MECHTCHERSKI are not about her.Relevance to Marie
Marie's rival for Torlonia. At the Teatro del Fondo in Naples, 19 April 1876, Torlonia speaks of her, and Marie learns that he knew the family by the wrong name until «Mlle Mechtchersky lui aurait dit le vrai nom» (058.0250, 058.0252); maman predicts «je suis sûre qu'on le mariera à la Mechtchersky» (058.0259), the match to be made through the comtesse Kiseleff and the ambassadress (058.0261). Back in Rome Marie hears that «La Metchersky est fiancée à M. Ygnatieff. Ce n'est donc pas Torlonia» (060.0030), and a few days later that Torlonia «lui a dit son amour pour la Metchersky» (060.0173).Probably the same young woman (0.7): «La princesse Mechtchersky qu'il a tant recherchée se marie avec Fabrizio Spinosa des princes Ruffo. C'est son deuxième fiasco» (068.1609, February 1877), and «le frère du Ruffo qui va épouser la Mestchersky» (069.0087). The Ignatieff engagement of May 1876 and the Ruffo marriage of 1877 are both Marie's reports; not checked.
