The story as Marie hears it (Naples, March 1877)
- 069.0113-0115 (1877-03-03): seen often at the Naples Skating with the young count: «Elle est autrichienne et se nomme Giselle Van Baeker; lui est un comte de Balzorano, riche Napolitain.» They have loved each other for four years; when the count asked for her hand, his mother the countess answered on her visiting card «Peut-on ajouter foi aux paroles d'un gamin ?», and Giselle swallowed a box of matches to poison herself but was saved.
- 069.0287 (1877-03-13) and 069.0496 (1877-03-23): «le comte de Balzorano, fiancé de Giselle» at the theatre; «Giselle et Balzorano donnent envie d'aimer.» 069.0524 (03-25): «La fameuse Giselle était devant moi pressant son épaule nue et décharnée contre Balzorano».
- 069.0536-0541 (1877-03-26): «la Gisella comme on la nomme ici. Cette fille sans fortune, sans naissance et avec une mère imbécile» has won the aristocratic ladies to her side. The «scène de l'église»: Franz told her the church and hour of his mother's confession and communion; she went to confess and take communion at the same time, then kissed the countess's hand («Je suis celle qui aime tant votre fils Madame, et que votre fils aime»); the countess consented, the count then had enquiries made and «se refâcha». «C'est la légende vivante de Naples». Marie envies her: «Celle-là a sa vie toute tracée, où l'amour avec Balzorano ou la mort» (069.0541); «Ah ! je voudrais aimer comme Giselle» (069.0547).
- 071.0113 (1877-05-02, Florence): Marie's sister Blanche and her husband look like lovers, «Giselle et Balzorano plutôt». 071.0199 (05-08): «j'aurais été une seconde Giselle … capable de plus d'une scène de l'église» (the footnote there tells the story).
- 075.0023-0024 (1877-09-28, Paris): from Schininà she learns the news: «Le comte Francesco de Balzorano a enfin épousé Giselle. Comme je suis contente !» They have been married «depuis un mois»; also 075.0094 (09-30) «Doivent-ils être heureux, Giselle et Balsorano» and 079.0511 (1878-04-23) «le bonheur de Giselle et de Balzarono».
