Pascarola’s visit helps me recover a little from this morning’s despair and from the mad laughter Melissano caused me.

This evening for the first time I enjoyed myself at the Skating. Ce soir pour la première fois je me suis amusée au Skating. Et pour commencer il se plaint de la difficulté qu’on a à arriver jusqu’à nous, les Napolitains sont si jaloux de leurs connaissances qu’ils ne veulent présenter personne.

And it was Melito’s introduction that had emboldened him, for in order to introduce him he went and asked Mlle Fabbricatore to find out from me whether I would allow it. But it was Olga Hamontoff who amused me. She was absolutely set on Melito being for her, and was angry in earnest because he did not ask to be introduced to her. He had to be brought to her almost by force, and even then she kept saying it was not according to the rules, and since it was meant for her, she could not understand why he was with me.
Et c’est la présentation de Melito qui l’avait enhardi, car pour le présenter il est allé prier Mlle Fabbricatore de me demander si je voulais bien. Mais c’est Olga Hamontoff qui m’amusait. Elle voulait à toute force que Melito fût pour elle et se fâchait pour de bon parce qu’il ne demandait pas de lui être présenté. Il a fallu le lui amener presque de force et encore elle ne cessait de dire que ce n’était pas selon les règles et puisque c’était pour elle, elle ne comprenait pas pourquoi il était avec moi.

Giselle et Balzorano donnent envie d’aimer. Si Balzorano n’était pas fou de sa bien-aimée, je deviendrais amoureuse de lui.
