Overview

Albert-Joseph Gautier, a young man of Emile d'Audiffret's circle in Nice, nicknamed «Pepino» (Kernberger 2013, glossary: "Gautier, Albert-Joseph: member of the Audiffret circle, nickname: Pepino"). Tall and handsome, he was an employee of the Crédit de Nice, placed there by his uncle (068.0798; Kernberger 2013, Paris entry of 1878: "an employee at the Crédit de Nice ... handsome, tall, slender, graceful, like a palm tree from Nice"). His brother is Michel Gautier, «Michka» (see MICHEL_GAUTIER).

Relevance to Marie

In December 1876 Marie ranks him among the men who could make her «parfaitement amoureuse» on the surface: «Albert Gautier qui animalement parlant est le plus beau des quatre» (068.0111). In January-February 1877 he becomes a regular at the Bashkirtseffs' in Nice: he talks Darwin and Cuvier with Marie and Collignon on her birthday (068.0796), gives her his arm at the races (068.0862), reports what the Cercle says of her pony carriage (068.0834), and spends evenings with the family (068.0943, 068.0959). Marie's verdict: «un garçon intelligent et instruit, causeur agréable et même blagueur comme Audiffret» (068.0797). In Paris on 12 October 1878 she meets him again, «the Pepino from the time of the Three Graces», and wishes she could make «a great man» of him (Kernberger 2013 translation; carnet 082).
