My birthday. Poor Walitsky gives me ten metres of charming lace, and the Anitchkoffs bring three superb bouquets; after which demonstrations I go off to drive two little white horses and see how they go, for I have had my basket carriage sent from Paris. Dina gets tired, so I take Collignon; we meet my family a hundred times, we go to the station three times, bring back the basket carriage and unpack it in the garden, everyone at once.
Gautier, who is invited for tomorrow, comes today; then Meyssner, and after dinner Pelikan, Broussais, Anitchkoff and Walitsky. The four of them had been at the dinner given at the London House by the former students of Moscow University. All four of them are tipsy.
Do [you] know what we talked about, Collignon, Gautier and I? Darwin, Cuvier, Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. For the most part I listened, thinking, rightly, that one must be sure of what one says before venturing.
Gautier, besides being exceedingly tall and perfectly handsome, is an intelligent and well-read young man, an agreeable talker, and even a joker, like Audiffret or Tiste of the Théâtre Français in Nice.
Broussais showed himself in his most curious light, but ended by saying smutty things and was booed. Then Gautier, in answer to my aunt, who claimed that his uncle kept him imprisoned in the depths of the Crédit de Nice — Gautier described how he had lived on mice during his weeks of confinement, and Broussais listened wide-eyed.
I received the two letters I wrote to myself the other day and showed them to Gautier, telling him that these letters had been preceded by a whole series of others.
Princess Souvoroff called on us.

Notes

In French in the original: panier — a light open carriage, here drawn by two small white horses (not a basket). ↩
