Claire and the Marshal's wife come to spend an hour here. They are in Paris to buy the wedding gift for young Fleury.
I keep thinking of that mysterious abomination he has in the groin. It is like a terrible answer to everything I might think, plan, desire, or fear. It is over — [one line cancelled]
All the confused things that fluttered and filled my brain are now gathered and fixed upon this black point.
It is a case that presents itself for the first time — it is something new; a man... A man, a great artist, and... well, all you know of it...
Condemned to death...
But that is serious!
And I am to think in advance, every day, that he is going to die? But it is frightful!
I am already hunched in upon myself, head drawn into my shoulders, waiting for the blow. And besides, why go to see him? If he lives he will not love me, and I cannot go to his house with that thought. And if he dies... Well, if only he were to die having felt something for me! But no — to go there, to attend as a friend upon the sufferings of that poor man, and to be for him the equal of Dina or of my aunt!
Ah! no! Ah! No! Why — I ask you? If my presence brought him some particular satisfaction — but it does not. What would you have — I cannot go there with these thoughts. I do not myself fully understand why, but so it is.
The thought that I am indifferent to him causes me more grief than seeing him suffer. In short, I no longer wish to go to his house.
He would understand nothing of it. That is to say — I shall go, but under compulsion.
Yes, it is over; he interests me no longer and I am nothing to him. I withdraw quietly, then, with the indifference of those who from fear prepare themselves in advance for the greatest horrors.
Has it not been so all my life?
When the blow comes I await it standing firm. Then I reason it through, I revolt, I grow tender. When it is all over. Then I am amused by it.
I cannot put two words together and...
But do not think I am desolate. I am only deeply absorbed — I wonder what this will be?
