Villevieille and Claire are here every day, and it is beginning to vex me to see my brushes being used, my paint tubes squeezed crooked, my habits disrupted... In any case... And all the more so because the weather is poor, I am displeased with my work illegible, in a bad humour, in a state of irritation pushed to the extreme... These ladies grate on me; even their perfectly natural cheerfulness sets my nerves on edge; they make fun of my bad temper in all friendliness, and I would like to throw them out of the window — furious at these strangers, not strangers by race, but strangers in ideas, in mind, in feeling.
Villevieille is rather ignorant — like most society women, for that matter — and full of absurd ideas... And I, full of ideas in the Victor Hugo vein... universal happiness, philosophy, liberty, arts, edifying instruction... In any case, it would take too long to say, and I say nothing of it to them... Nor here either — what would be the use? I am discouraged.
Claire has taken on boyish manners now that we are very intimate — she plays schoolboy pranks: one moment she flings a brush at one’s fingers hard enough to hurt, and this afternoon she hit me on the shoulder with a book. Then, hiding her face: “give it back.”
It would degenerate into fisticuffs, then.
And indeed it makes me angry — a stupid anger, as stupid as the joke. It is strange how, every day and with almost everyone, one encounters things that are foolish, shocking, that I would never think of doing myself.
I cannot tell you how angry this girl made me, and I do not know how to stop her, for getting seriously cross would be ridiculous and humiliating... This evening at the Italiens, I am rather pretty... Bojidar was there, and M. de Rochefort (not Henri) — just appointed embassy secretary at Rio de Janeiro. This sensitive diplomat reminds me of the sensitive and perfect Gabriel Géry.
