April Fool's aside — I am accepted.1 Julian came to say so himself last night after midnight, on leaving Lefebvre's. He saw Oelsnitz there.

Poisson d'avril à part, je suis reçue. Julian est venu le dire lui-même hier après minuit en sortant de chez Lefèbvre. C'est Oelsnitz qu'il a vue.

We drank punch at the studio. Bojidar, without being asked, inquired of Fidière (a young man from downstairs) and assures me I have number two.2 This seems to me excessive.

Nous avons pris du punch à l'atelier. Bojidar sans que je le lui demande s'est informé chez Fidière (un jeune d'homme d'en bas) et assure que j'ai le *numéro 2.* Ceci me paraît excessif.

Our first Saturday reception — la Bailleul, the Tchoumakoffs, the Gavinis, Odette (Randouin I), Lagnadès-Effendi (Turkish embassy).

Notre premier samedi, la Bailleul, les Tchoumakoff, les Gavini, Odette (Randouin I), Lagnadès-Effendi (ambassade turque).

La Bailleul brings Mme de la Lande, her friend, who is going to give a costume ball and is counting on my costume celebrated in Le Sport. Saint-Amand is coming to the Italiens with us this evening. Mme de Peyronney (Vicomtesse de Létorière) was to come with us but is unwell!! — "No matter," says Saint-Amand, "the courtesy is made; she will come to see you and we shall have a 'Carnet d'un mondain.' Besides, when Agathe takes something on — you will see. I want you to be this spring the most fashionable young woman in Paris, the most remarked. We need a success — a real one. Le Sport has made a start; you will see how it will go." I am in an Arab gauze dress with a very airy tulle fichu.

La Bailleul amène Mme de la Lande, son amie, qui va donner un bal costumé et qui compte sur mon costume célébré par le "Sport". Saint Amand qui vient aux Italiens avec nous ce soir. Mme de Peyronney (vicomtesse de Létarière) devait venir avec nous mais elle est souffrante.!! - C'est égal dit Saint Amand la politesse est faite, elle viendra vous voir et nous ferons un "Carnet d'un mondain", du reste quand Agathe entreprend quelque chose, vous verrez. Je veux qu'au printemps vous soyez la jeune fille la plus à la mode de Paris, la plus regardée. Il nous faut un succès, un vrai. Le "Sport" a commencé, vous verrez comme ça ira. Je suis en robe de gaze arabe avec un fichu de tulle très vaporeux.

I thought I had kept the feuilleton about the cocodettes where the "Baron de Saint-Agathe" is discussed3 — it would explain the character: how his flame, entirely... platonic, is not the kind that burns; how he seeks no conflagration; how he gives himself body and soul to his idol of the moment. As soon as some personality appears in society capable of making a noise in the world, he seizes upon her, celebrates her, builds altars to her everywhere, speaks of nothing but her praise. And then, once the reputation is made, the idol established, surrounded, settled, accepted by the public — he withdraws and passes to another cult. Only, it will be more difficult in my case: an American introduced by her minister — that would be straightforward; or an actress, a singer, a dancer. But I am a girl of society, and I have neither my embassy nor any support in the Russian colony — on the contrary. Only last Monday (the Appletcheieffs, no doubt) people were saying unpleasant things about us at the Queen's, and one of the chamberlains asked Gavini what we were — and Gavini had to reassure him. And I who held my tongue about Mme Appletcheieff — if I had said something, whatever she might have said afterwards would have been considerably weakened! But I said to myself: I shall keep silent and heaven will reward me for it... Perhaps it will, later — but for the moment it only loosened the tongue of the vile Russian. Well.

Je croyais avoir gardé le feuilleton des cocodettes où il est question du baron de Saint Agathe, cela vous expliquerait le caractère du personnage, il y est très gentillement et véridiquement raconté, comment sa flamme toute... platonique n'est pas de celles qui brûlent, qu'il ne cherche même pas à allumer d'incendie et qu'il se donne corps et âme à son idéal du jour. Sitôt qu'il se montre dans quelque monde que ce soit une personnalité qui permet de faire quelque bruit dans le monde, il s'en empare, il la célèbre, il lui dresse des autels partout, il n'a que son éloge à la bouche. Et que du reste une fois la réputation faite, l'idole installée, entourée, casée, acceptée du public il se retire et passe à un autre culte. Seulement ce sera difficile pour moi; une américiane présentée par son ministre mais ce serait la moindre des choses ou bien une actrice, une chanteuse, une danseuse. Mais moi je suis une jeune fille du monde et je n'ai ni mon ambassade, ni aucun appui dans la colonie russe, au contraire. Lundi dernier encore (les Appletcheieff sans doute) on a dit des bêtises de nous chez la Reine et un des chambellans a demandé ce que nous étions à Gavini qui a été obligé de le rassurer. Et moi qui ai fait la discrète sur le compte de Mme Appletcheieff si j'avais dit quelque chose, ce qu'elle aurait dit ensuite serait considérablement affaibli ! Mais je me disais, je me tairai et le ciel m'en récompensera... peut-être le fera-t-il plus tard, mais sur l'heure il a délié la langue de la sale russe. Bien.

Saint-Amand will have all the more work to do since the jealousies aroused will have no shortage of ways to blackball4 me.

Saint Amand aura d'autant plus à faire que les jalousies éveillées n'auront que l'embarras du choix pour me blackbouler.

Four days ago Gabriel was badly bruised along his whole side when a carriage knocked into him while he was paying his coachman. He is in bed and we shall not see each other for at least ten days.

Il y a quatre jours Gabriel a eu tout le côté très meurtri par une voiture qui l'a accroché pendant qu'il payait son cocher. Le voilà au lit et nous nous verrons pas dix jours au moins.
