[Letter from Mme Bashkirtseff to her daughter Marie]
Grand Hôtel, Kharkov (29 January)
My angel, my dear Moussia, if you knew how I am doing everything I possibly can to come to you, my pride, my glory, my happiness and my joy! Everyone here says that this wretched case will come to nothing, that we have won it.
The worst of all is the loss of time, and my anxiety about you, which cannot even be put into words. Had I been able to imagine the suffering I am now obliged to live through, separated from you, I should of course never have gone to Russia.
Good Maria Bogdanovna sent me your letter, and I, like a lover, read it over and over and water it with my tears? I kiss your hands and your feet and pray God that I may do so in reality as soon as possible. I hold you tight, and our dear Aunt Nadia. Yours for ever. Marie Bashkirtseff
