Here is an article from Le Gaulois on which I need not dwell. Even if I were to hold back my tears by clenching my teeth and opening my eyes very wide, do you think such pleasures are made to rejuvenate me or to cure me? It rises to my throat and strangles me, and they think syrups will do me good! In the end, it is always good to weep because one pities oneself and thinks that heaven will have pity too. But no. I have no illusions on that subject...
It is not this queen-strumpet nor women like Mesdames Bail or the Hechts who dazzle me with their wretched splendors... But when I think that everywhere, at everyone's!... I say nothing of the Queen; she has invited me ten times to come with my aunt in Maman's absence. I will not go — first because of Maman, and then it is better not to go there anymore... some annoyance might occur.
And my mother who is there, in Russia, and who knows how to arrange nothing for me. Oh! It is mad but I am in despair.
