Leaving the studio, I go to pick up Madame de Daillens and we go to 12 rue Cail, to Mademoiselle Hubertine Auclert's. It is a Wednesday, a favorable day according to Edmond. We had rung in vain three times and, having gone back down, were parlaying with the concierge when a young woman came to the lodge; we had stopped, undecided.

En sortant d'atelier je vais prendre de Daillens et nous allons 1 2, rue Cail, chez Mlle Hubertine Auclert. C'est un mercredi, jour favorable d'après Edmond. Nous avions sonné vainement trois fois et étant redescendues parlementions avec le concierge lorsqu'une jeune femme vint à la loge, nous nous étions arrêtées indécises.

I recognized her instantly.

Je l'ai *reconnue* à l'instant.

The concierge calls us back and Mademoiselle Auclert invites us to come up. Women's Rights Headquarters. The words written on the door had already given me, before the young lady's arrival, an access of former enthusiasm, and I pretended to throw my arms around Madame de Daillens' neck.

Le concierge nous rappelle et Mlle Auclert nous invite à monter. *Droit des femmes siège social.* Les mots écrits sur la porte m'avaient déjà donné avant l'arrivée de la demoiselle, un accès d'enthousiasme d'autrefois et je fis semblant de sauter au cou de la Daillens.

Very poor and simple and bare, the office. She lights the fire and sits before the fireplace, Madame de Daillens on her right, I on her left.

Très pauvre et simple et nu le bureau. Elle allume du feu et s'assied devant la cheminée, de Daillens à sa droite, moi à sa gauche.

It is my companion in campaigns who begins... Then I say that I cannot defend myself from a great emotion in the presence of the woman who has so courageously taken in hand the defense of our rights. Madame de Daillens is French, widow of an Englishman, M. Norscott. I am of foreign origin but raised in France, and I am called Pauline Daria Orell. My secret goal is to paint Hubertine's portrait for the Salon. I adopt the pseudonym Daria for painting — very pretty, very simple. It is a Russian baptismal name.

C'est ma compagne de campagnes qui commence... Alors je dis que je ne puis me défendre d'une grande émotion en présence de la femme qui a si courageusement pris en mains la défense de nos droits. De Daillens est française, veuve d'un Anglais M. Norscott. Moi d'origine étrangère mais élevée en France et je m'appelle Pauline Daria Orell. Moi, mon but secret c'est de faire le portrait d'Hubertine pour le Salon. J'adopte le pseudonyme de Daria, pour la peinture, très joli, très simple. C'est un nom de baptême russe.

In short, she will be good for painting. Dark-haired, the complexion perhaps a little ruddy, but it is cold and then there are days. Small hands a little red, small feet. A bearing and language very proper.

En somme, elle sera bien pour la peinture. Brune, le teint un peu couperosé peut-être, mais il fait froid et puis il y a des jours. De petites mains un peu rouges, de petits pieds. Une mise et un langage très convenables.

She is likable and kind, the accent not too distinguished. She gives us a program, a little brochure; we shake hands.

Elle est sympathique et gentille, l'accent pas trop distingué. Elle nous donne un programme, une petite brochure, nous nous serrons les mains.

We join, we shall return, we shall pay our dues of twenty-five centimes per month, we shall come to the lectures. By heavens! Until next Wednesday at three o'clock. I was amiable and said that the main argument of the reactionaries — the ugliness, the age, and the grotesqueness of the female lecturers — cannot apply, for: you are young and pretty.

Nous adhérons, nous reviendrons, nous déposerons notre cotisation de vingt-cinq centimes par mois, nous viendrons aux conférences. Pardieu ! à mercredi prochain à trois heures. J'ai été aimable et dis que le principal argument des réactionnaires, la laideur, la vieillesse et le grotesque des conférencières ne peut être de mise car: vous êtes jeune et jolie.

I am pleased — no, not yet, for it can turn out badly; does not everything turn out badly for me?

Je suis contente, non pas encore car cela peut mal tourner, tout ne me tourne t-il pas mal.
