I have gone back to the atelier; by way of friends there are Mme Lloyd, Mademoiselle de Villevielle and Mme de Daillens!
Maman had great successes at the Russian church: the Grand Duke Nicholas bowed to her, after which the Ambassador came to speak to her, and today another chat with Prince Orloff; and the Grand Duke asked her whether she had anyone in her family decorated with the Order of St George (it was a mass on the occasion of the feast of the Knights of St George), whereupon Maman answered that indeed, during the Crimean War, on the Malakoff, her brother Wladimir, barely sixteen years old, had been decorated by Him on the battlefield. The Grand Duke remembered the occasion and was extremely gracious, adding that the whole family was heroic, since Madame had not been afraid to go out in such frightful weather.
Well! this Wladimir, with such a start in life, went off and married in the provinces, resigning his commission and spending his life drinking. He did serve in the last campaign, though, but without any distinction. Maman has always had escapades of this kind... brilliant ones: emperors, grand dukes, and all of it so innocent, so useless!
