I go with Berthe to the Gavinis’. A new dress of black cloth and a charming, quiet hat.
There were only Valentine Pernety, Randouin and Chaudordy.
But we stay a very long time talking about my three passions: Prince Jérôme, Gambetta and a handsome young man. In the end we take Chaudordy away with us and drop him at the Duc Decazes’s door.
The Mouzays and Mme de Bailleul dine with us, Berthe too. Alexis arrives in the evening.
I am in a white dress — Empire, Directoire, Récamier, whatever you like. But I am very pretty: blood-red lips and an admirable complexion. I am never like this when it would be worth the trouble... We withdraw to my room, Dina, de Daillens and I, to make fun of Alexis’s chastity; he is dumbfounded and flattered. It is all the same to me; there are days when I must amuse myself. It was mad but funny.
The Empress Eugénie passed through Paris and stayed there a night and a day. The newspaper articles have once again brought tears to my eyes. The Empress’s mother is at death’s door.
