I have a little morning hat so perfectly proper that I have no fear of going quite alone to spend my morning at the Louvre. But as this hat, while being distinguished, also becomes me, I make the conquest of a young artist who follows me the whole time and risks a tip of his hat in a corridor where there is no one — but I saw nothing, and he was thoroughly disconcerted by it.

J'ai un petit chapeau du matin si comme il faut que je ne crains pas d'aller toute seule passer ma matinée au Louvre. Mais comme tout en étant distingué ce chapeau me va, je fais la conquête d'un jeune artiste qui me suit tout le temps et risque un coup de chapeau dans un corridor où il n'y a personne mais je n'ai *rien vu* et il en fut assez décontenancé.

In the afternoon our two drawing rooms — opened and looking very fine — had the pleasure of receiving Princess Karageorgevitch and her husband, Madame Mavrocordato and her daughters, then old Madame Gavini and the Linsingen woman.

Dans l'après-midi les deux salons ouverts et fort beaux ont le bonheur de recevoir la princesse Karageorgevitch et son mari, Mme Mavrocordato et ses filles, puis la mère Gavini et la Linsingen.

In the evening, left quite alone, I work myself up so much in singing that my heart still beats and my eyes still shine.

Le soir restée toute seule je m'exalte tellement en chantant que j'ai encore le cœur qui bat et les yeux qui brillent.

Here is a newspaper clipping — but it has scarcely moved me at all; if I keep it, it is out of vanity — I like to prove that I never [Crossed out: never] attach myself to anything without color. And then! — what can I say — this man is so much my... male.

Voici un bout de journal mais cela ne m'a presque rien fait; si je le garde c'est par vanité, j'aime à prouver que je ne m'attaque [Barré: jamais] à rien d'incolore. Et puis ! que voulez-vous cet homme est tellement mon... mâle.

I trust you understand the meaning I give to that expression — I add this for the majority, which is rather dense.

J'espère bien que vous comprenez le sens que je donne à cette expression, j'ajoute ceci pour la majorité qui est assez bête.
