I was still dressing when he came to bring back the bracelet and to tell Rosalie that he is ill, irritated, furious!
He told me yesterday that he had written to me and that the letter was in the post; I shall send for it — here it is. [Letter missing from the manuscript]
Ah! my poor kingdom is sadly scorned.
Dina is unwell, so we go to the races with Maman. Larderel’s coldness keeps my spirits from running too high. At once Melito, Caracciolo, Altamura, Zunica, Melissano, Campomarino.
We go to the stands, where I see Larderel, who comes to shake hands with us and then goes back down to his horses and his jockeys in a state of agitation that I understand.

And then who? The famous Torlonia of Rome, who hardly leaves our side. We are introduced to a marquis and to an old, rich baron. I am surrounded.
Larderel comes back, sweeps Zunica aside and talks for a few minutes, correct and polite. Then he goes up to the Piccolelis (the lady who cast doubt on my curves at the Skating), on the arm of Balzorano, who is ugly.
We are seen home — ah yes, Marcuard was with us, and Pascarola too. Ten people in all, and the two of us make twelve.
I come home dazed and quietly sad.
He did not come this evening. Marcuard and Doenhoff talked. I was all ears; it was perhaps the first time I had heard a conversation between two courtiers, talking about their acquaintances and a whole crowd of people. Pay no attention to my expressions today; you will soon know why.
Marcuard takes my caricatures; I no longer remember what I dreamed up; I fell to the floor, rather luckily, and when they had gone, overwrought, frightened, hurt, I began to cry.
