Poor clock.
All the same, I no longer know what I am doing, what I am saying, or what is going on around me. I should like to go quite mad — but with a merry madness.
I went out onto the terrace with Dina and all the dogs, and Mme Anitchkoff found us there. She said disagreeable and stupid things.
M. Alexis de Meyssner has come from Petersburg with a letter from Nina. It is all I can do to drag myself through until eight o’clock. He had been kept to dinner because he is Nina’s nephew, and the whole time I had to talk and ask questions so as not to look like a dullard. The thing is, I am a dullard as well; when M. and Mme Zoubaloff were announced, I slipped away. I have nothing to do with such people.
I am ugly.
