A card game for upwards of three thousand francs, and in the evening a herd of [blacked out: hunters] from Poltava. I sang a grand aria, and then, since we were at table between the fruit and the champagne, I sang some songs... Great success. Michel was drunk and was howling songs — it gave us a pretext for laughter.

J'ai chanté un grand air, et puis comme on était à table entre les fruits et le champagne, je chantai des couplets... Grand succès. Michel était ivre et hurlait des chansons, ce fut un prétexte pour rire.

For an hour all went well, but after an hour I felt a strong desire to send them all to the devil — one gentleman in particular who insisted on talking to me about music. Je me retins à temps et le reste s'est bien passé.

That is something at least — those animals are worth ten to fifteen thousand francs easily.

C'est toujours quelque chose, ces bêtes-là valent bien de dix à quinze mille francs.

Paul conducted the riffraff to the red house. They have been invited for tomorrow — tomorrow a great wolf hunt.

Paul conduisit ces saligauds dans la maison rouge. On les a invités pour demain, demain grande chasse au loup.
