Pleasantly flushed, I returned to the Chinese salon (so called on account of two vases and some dolls) and, sitting down on the floor, began to sort my brushes and colours. My father is sceptical about my talents. I sat Michel in an armchair, Gritz in another, and placing myself at the feet of the latter, I dashed off in fifteen minutes a caricature of Michel, on a board that Gritz held for me, serving as my easel. And all the while I was making my brushstrokes right and left I could feel myself being devoured by eyes — especially on account of my bare neck in the Empire-style dress.

Agréablement échauffée je rentrai dans le salon chinois (ainsi nommé à cause de deux vases et des poupées) et m'asseyant par terre me mis à ranger mes pinceaux et mes couleurs. Mon père est incrédule quant à mes talents. Je fis asseoir Michel dans un fauteuil, Gritz dans un autre, et me plaçant aux pieds de ce dernier, je [Mot noirci: fais] en quinze minutes une caricature de Michel, sur une planche que Gritz me tenait me servant de chevalet. Et tout en donnant à droite et à gauche des coups de pinceau, je sentais que j'étais dévorée des yeux, surtout à cause de mon cou découvert dans cette robe Empire.

My father was pleased and Michel kissed my hand.

Mon père fut content et Michel me baisa la main.

Ah! You know, Kapitan fled in the night after telling Paul that he was nothing but a poor wretch and that his head was already swimming on account of me.

Ah ! vous savez, Kapitan s'est enfui la nuit après avoir dit à Paul qu'il n'était qu'un pauvre homme et que la tête lui tournait déjà à cause de moi.

After lunch I proposed a game of croquet, but the prince and Gritz told me, with a stupid smile, that they had to absent themselves for two hours on urgent business. And Paul came in and told them, very threateningly, that if they left he would tell me everything.

Après déjeuner je proposai une partie de croquet mais le prince et Gritz me dirent en souriant bêtement, qu'ils devaient s'absenter pendant deux heures pour des affaires graves. Et Paul entra et leur dit, tout menaçant, que s'ils partaient il me dirait tout.

— They want to go into the forest, he whispered to me. I told them it was an affront to you, but they understand no delicacy whatsoever, and think it would be impolite not to go and visit that woman.

- Ils veulent aller dans la forêt, me dit-il à l'oreille. Je leur ai dit que c'était un affront pour toi mais ils ne comprennent aucune délicatesse et trouvent qu'il est impoli de ne pas aller voir cette femme.

I did not so much as change my expression, but I felt something like a disillusionment regarding Gritz; and taking Michel by the sleeve I led him into a room, locked him in with the key turned twice, and forbade him to escape through the window.

Je ne changeai pas seulement de figure, mais j'éprouvai comme une désillusion à l'endroit de Gritz et prenant Michel par la manche je le conduisis dans une chambre et l'y enfermai à double tour et lui défendant de se sauver par la fenêtre.

Downstairs I found a tilbury for me to drive myself. A thoughtful gesture from Paul — only it seemed to me there was something behind it, and I invited Pacha to get in with me.

En bas je trouvai un tilbury pour conduire moi-même. Une prévenance de Paul, seulement il me semblait qu'il y avait quelque chose là-dessous, et j'invitai Pacha à monter avec moi.
