At breakfast, the young U. was told that his mother was very ill. Before he arrived, she was dead. It is dreadful for the child. I did not go to the pigeon shooting, and it caused me great sorrow. I cried like an animal — at the piano, in the afternoon, at dinner, and even in the evening.
Au déjeuner on annonce au jeune U... que sa mère est très mal. Avant d'arriver, elle était morte. C'est affreux pour cet enfant. Je ne suis pas allée au Tir aux pigeons, cela m'a fait beaucoup de peine. J'ai pleuré comme une bête, au piano, dans l'après-midi, au dîner et même le soir.
The shooting, I do regret it, but it is above all the missed chance of seeing the Duke that troubles me.
Le Tir, je le regrette, mais c'est surtout l'occasion manquée de voir le duc qui m'ennuie.
