Overview

«Robert Milton» was the pen name of Albert de Saint-Albin (1843-1901), a French turf journalist who wrote race reports and sporting chronicles, later in Le Figaro, and published Les courses de chevaux en France (Hachette, 1890) as "A. de Saint-Albin (Robert Milton)" (Wikipedia, "Albert de Saint-Albin"; Gallica, BnF). Kernberger (2013, glossary): "Milton, Robert: sports reporter".

Relevance to Marie

His report on the Nice races in Le Sport, read by Marie on 27 January 1877, described «deux petites dames appartenant au monde très aimable» in a white pony carriage, «un vrai chou à la crème» (068.0842): an insinuation that Marie and Dina were demi-mondaines. The family consulted their lawyer Malausséna and approached M. de Villemessant (068.0847-0509, 068.0858). Milton's next report (068.0895) half-retracted: the young ladies belonged «au meilleur monde russe», but the equipage remained «un parfait à la vanille». Marie suspects he was put up to it (068.0845).
