Hippolyte de Villemessant (1810-1879), French journalist and press magnate, founder and director of the daily Le Figaro (relaunched 1854, daily from 1866). Relevance to Marie

After Robert Milton's insinuating report on the Nice races in Le Sport (27 January 1877), the family's lawyer Malausséna advises a quiet word with M. de Villemessant rather than a lawsuit (068.0848). He is in Monaco that evening; Marie's mother sees him the next day, «et on va arranger cela» (068.0850, 068.0858). A week later Marie hears that the Figaro itself has printed something about the family (068.0962).
